2001 PASSAT suddenly will not start

I have a 2001 Passatt V6 that was running great and now will not start.
We washed the car, and let it sit and dry. Some 4 hours later, I started it and drove it into the garage. When we went to start it the next morning, all it will do is crank (normal speed). It sounds like it wants to start (sputters a little) but will not pick up and run. Not out of gas. No water sprayed in engine compartment during wash. Smell of gas slightly when cranking. Suspect CCM got wet. How can I troubleshoot. Turn key on and Check engine light comes on so ECM is getting power. Can I troubleshoot without scanner. Can I jumper off CCM somehow?
Thanks,

A good start would be to scan the computer for codes. Electronics is a funny thing.

Per Buckwheat, in Powhatan Va. - remove the intake hose from the throttle body and spray some carb cleaner in the inlet side. See if it starts - it did. Added more carb cleaner after it stalled and it ran again for a few seconds. Charged the battery fully, cranked it over and pumped the pedal repeatedly until it took off on its own (w/o carb cleaner). Fuel supply was the problem. 1 of 3 things, fuel filter (replaced it tonight), fuel pump relay (easy swap next), or fuel pump itself (Costly - last resort).
The fuel filter is located just in front of the right rear wheel, under a cover with four bolts and one screw. Be sure to buy new hose clamps - can not reuse the German OEM crimp ons. Thanks for the reply Will12. Hope solution found. Car is running. Believe problem could have been wet fuel pump relay (not sure where it is) resulting from car wash. Sounds shakey though - so replace filter as 1st logical step. Mirage_me. :licka:

Also, passats want:
- 91+ octane gas (FYI) it is also written on the gas tank lid.
- Put some injector cleaner in gas tank.
- 99 1.8t passat wants 5w-30 fully synthetic oil (against sludge build-up, and for turbo).
- check if your air filter is in good condition (change either 1/2 yearly, or yaerly)
I don't know too much about VW fuel delivery.

VW passats are good cars, except you have to do exactly what it says in the manual.
Good luck.
