Flooded 5.7 Vortec?

Just went to start the 2000 Chevy express, it has the 5.7 vortec engine. It spins over, & seems to stumble a little, But it won't start. The exhaust seems to smell of fuel a little. Not sure why this would happen, its 38 degrees, & it ran perfect up until it was parked on saturday.

Any ideas? I hate the thought of trying to pull plugs on a chevy express van. That & it is in a foot of snow right now.

Is there an easy way to stop the fuel from being injected? I was thinking holding WOT would stop the injection, but I don't want to make it worse, if there is a better idea. If this is even the problem.

I plugged in my MT2500 scanner & there are no trouble codes.

Holding the throttle open to 80% or more upon cranking will invoke "Clear Flood Mode" and stop all injector pulses. It is important that you turn on the ignition and wait briefly BEFORE depressing the accelerator and cranking the engine. The PCM needs a few milliseconds to perform the power-up self diagnostic and learn the closed throttle position (voltage) of the TPS. Then you can "floor it" and crank the engine to attempt to drive out excessive accumulated fuel.

It sounds like for whatever reason, it might be flooded. Try holding it at WOT to see if it starts (if it rumbles to life, hold it at WOT until it starts to smooth out). It won't hurt anything as long as you don't let the engine spin to high RPM on startup.

actually no. After tying it day after day. I figured out it wasn't flooded, I could just smell fuel.

Then one day, it started right up like there were no issues. No codes set either. So now I don't trust it all & it hardley gets driven. Probably not 50 miles since this first post.

One thing it does do now, is it will intermitantly crank for 3 or 4 times longer than normal before it will fire. Sometimes its right away, sometimes it will crank for 6-8 seconds before firing.

Any thoughts? I have been waiting for it to crap out again, but I don't drive it enough for it to happen. Kind of a catch 22

Well now it sounds like you need to get a fuel pressure gauge on it to check for a possible pump problem.

As said when no start check that fuel prerssure.
Also on the express van they have a problem with the wiring to the fuel pump.
if fuel pump is not running or low on prerssure check the wiring to fuel pump at the transmission cross member plug in.
Check for fuel pump 12 volts power to it and threw it.
If it is losing voltage or ground or power there wire around the plug in.
