Possibly a LT1

I currently have a 3000gt n/a and I am now in the hunt for either a GTP GP or a LT1 Firebird or Camaro (prefferably firebird/ t/a). How are these things in general for reliability? I have read for performance they do anywhere from 14.0-15.1 in the 1/4 which seems like a very large spread so I was confused as to how well they do. Any other problems or things I should especially look for when buying one? I do have to say I love how the parts are a dime a dozen compared to my 3000gt which is incredibly expensive no matter what you by for it lol.
Thanks for any input in advance,
Alex

Like anything, if it is well maintained the reliability shouldn't be an issue. That said, the ignition system on LT1s known as "optispark" tends to go bad after a long while, I'm sure someone can elaborate in this. BUt in general, I wouldn't be worried.
Oh, and LT1 can run high 13s stock in the 1/4. And if you have the money, you might as well spring for an LS1 and run high 12s with bolt-ons :evillol:

Haha, no the LS1 is a little out of my price range as of right now. A low 14 or high 13 car is kind of what I had in mind as of right now. I would definately keep my 3000gt right now too because I love it but it breaks down about every mile or 2. It is on it's 3rd motor, 2nd ECU, 2nd tranny and has had various other things go wrong.
*Edit: I also noticed that almost every t/a, firebird, and Camaro LT1's are auto's. Are most of them actually autos or have I just run into a bad luck streak here. (I am looking for the 6 spd)

Those of us with a 6 speed are unwilling to part with them. :smokin:

oh, btw you might have more luck finding a m6 SS then a M6 Z, as well as M6 WS6 compared to a M6 birdy..

You could find an LS1 for that price.
And you've got to be kidding me! That's a goofy-ass looking car. Not my cup of tea.

^^ Haha, yeah I expected that would happen. I am still in search on a LT1 and probably will be for the next month as I need to completely put back together my 3000gt as it was just broken into and needs a new computer. But I have no doubt that I will either get a LT1 or a GTP depending on what I find first for a decient price.

Ok, I have been looking around and it says just about everywhere that a 95 LT1 t/a has 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and 14.0 ET and the firebird is 6.1 with a 15.1 ET. And they are both LT1's. What is the deal with this?

The birds are a tad heavier than the maros. But they are both the LT1. And stock LT1's can dip into the 13's. They aren't just 14 sec stock cars.

Ok, so I have found a Firebird I am looking at getting right now. It has the following mods:
-bored out 355 lt1 with new factory spec pistons, oil pump, main bearing, cam bearing, lifers, all new gaskets. Runs great(10k miles ago by a dealership)
-shortie headers
-off road y-pipe
-flowmaster race muffler
-G2 intake
- motive 4:11 ratio rear end gears
-MSD 8.5mm wires
-Autolite Plugs
Now I know different cars get different gains off of different mods so I was just curious as to if someone could ballpark what kind of gains those would give for a LT1. I am looking for a low 14 to mid 13 second car prefferabley and I was thinking this might be a good deal. It is does have the T56 6 speed as well.

That should get you there easily with the 4.11's. The 6th gear will offset the mpg loss with such a steep rearend.
