Gas Gauge

I noticed that after my caprice sits for a while, the gas gauge will slowly make its way up to about the half tank mark, but thats only when the key isnt turned and engine running. it will go back to the correct reading when the engine is running. i dont know how acurate the needle is either, but i know the car stalled because of no gas and the needle wasnt all the way on the E yet, it was almost there though. what should i check to make sure the gauge is accurate and working properly? and is it normal for the needle to wander up a little after the car has been shut off for a while? by the way i havent had a chance to fill up on gas completely yet so i dont know how well the gauge works after a full fill up either.

My car exhibits the exact same behavior - don't worry about it, just learn where "E" is on the gauge (not physical E that's marked, but where your tank really is empty - mine runs dry at the 1/16th or so area before the E on the gauge).
