My first diecast paintjob...chameleon(w.i.p.)

I decided to try my FIRST EVER diecast paint job with my duplicolor chameleon paint that i have used before.pics here (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2459295/1)...

...on this old(probly 5-6+yrs and VERY cheap maisto ssr. the head/taillights are painted on...like i said its a very cheap model. i was able to remove/save the headlight 'lenses' and all the chrome/windows.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/6646/image0026jm5.jpg

now wat i have to do is smooth out the old paint before i apply the basecoat and figure out somethin for a suitable 'stand'.

wat grit sandpaper should i use to smooth out the old paint?? thanx!

Youve seen my navigator, and its not that nice, but i tryed my best. Anyways i used sandpaper for the majority, and skrapped off the little parts with a knife. My project had a zero cost, because the car i had was a gift, and the sandpaper i had anyways. Im not a pro with diecast models, but i gave it a go, and it turned out okay. As for the painting part, all i did was a layer of black paint and silver decal. I dont know what to make the car shinney with.

I think i made this too long, and probably boring, but thats the best answer that i would answer to your question. :)

(for all of you people out there who dont think this is right, i dont want a huge fight or something)

Here you go; This thread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59123) should help you out on how to get a good paint job done. Diecast or plastic, it pretty much works the same way.

heres the black basecoat...first step of the duplicolor mirage color shift paint process.

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/654/image0031as1.jpg

NEXT STEP...6 coats of the actual chameleon color...the more coats u add; the more drastic the color change.

Isnt it the more layers you put on,the more messed up the car become. THats what happened in my case.

I know the real cars have clear coat, but i didnt know about the toys.

So do you brush it with a paint brush over the car? and where can I buy it?

Hobbes

If you have a hobby shop in your area, then go there. If not, then department stores or even auto parts shops have some. They have spray paint of all kinds including clear coat. And make sure your coats are evenly sprayed. No more brushing for you boy... :evillol:

Thanks Hobbes! That helps. And would I spray it on a done car like the navigator in my signature, or does the paint have to be fresh.

Hobbes

I don't want to throw out the wrong info, but make sure you clean the dust from your truck before clearing it. I'm pretty sure you can spray it on as is...

yeah unfortunately it snowed today so i could only get one coat of color on...im in high school so my mom has banned me from painting inside...even painting outside and letting it dry inside. and our house is completely surrounded by trees so stuff drips from the tress...which can get into the paint:(

NNOOO...i was talking about this SPECIFIC chameleon color paint. the way this paint was made by the company makes it so the more coats u add the more drastic the CHAMELEON affect.

your paint is just ONE color. the chameleon paint changes colors.

DID U BRUSH PAINT UR NAVI?!??!?!? of course its gonna get messed up that way!!!! u gotta spray paint dude!!!!! brushing should only be used for small parts...not entire bodies! just some constructive criticism

u kno i just thought of this...but this black basecoat would look great for an oldskool hotrod model...w/ the 'flat black' look.

I did spray paint the navigator, and all of my models I customized. Its just the layer might start to drip and mess everythink out. That was when i wasnt pro enough. :) . Now I got a pretty good idea on how to paint. I just cant, its snowy! :(

alphalanos
02-25-2007, 09:49 PM
you shouldn't be spraying so much that it runs. you only spray a coat then let it dry, then you can add coats. you last couple coats can be a little heavier to make it more wet looking. then you clear it.

ooohhhh ok my bad if i insulted ure painting skills lol. yeah wat that guy said is right...u do light coats...let the model dry, and then keep adding light coats until u get to where u want it.

ChevyRidinLow

After the 2nd coat of color. u can see the color change starting to appear. unfortunately it snowed yesterday so i had to paint in the garage..and the wind blew a few water drops onto the wet paint. i'll just have to lightly sand them out once the paint dries.

I decided to stop with the 4th coat of color. the 1st coat of color is now drying. 1 or 2 more coats of clear to go.

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/7835/image0034yr9.jpg

that 'grey' looking spot is just a reflection.

http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/2581/image0035er6.jpg

the paint job didn't come out perfect...theres a few messed up spots but overall i think it looks great:):)

oh cool. and about you [ possibly] painting the interior chameleon...:shakehead .I think a grey would look better, or just paint certain parts of the interior Chameleon like the dash or something. i dunno just an ideah

Of course I would and yes, you caught me in act :banghead: . I painted the frame alone without anyother parts on at the time

(joke) LOL

The inside would be so slick like a sand colour, or like the dude said earlier, gray or something, with some parts still the chameleon. Talk for example the classic bucket seat, not the seat style, the paint job.

(after seeing the video, im sooooo jealous, that paint is somethin')

thanx man! if u want this paint look for it at autozone...it's $20. it's called 'Duplicolor Mirage colorshift paint'. make sure u look at the box to see wat color ure gettin...i got the 'red/blue'.

yeah doin the seats like that would be nice but the seats are so small it'd be very hard to tape them up and stuff. idk maybe i'll try it.

nice job man!

I remeber my first model paintjob was on a 1:24 jada truck with Misti Colour from Duplicolor and it was SO bad it was rougher than a rock

but after a little while of getting used to it and the airbrush, my paint jobs are SUPER smooth

you should do something with that big trunk ;) *hint hint*

P.S - After watching that video, it has more shift than the one I use, same amount of coats.. I'll have to get it, anyone know the price?

THANX! but the trunk doesnt open.

the paint i use is the 'DUPLICOLOR MIRAGE COLOR SHIFT' paint. it comes in a kit for $20 at autozone. make sure u look at the box to see wat color ure getting...there are different color combo's available. i used the 'red/blue'.

cool thanks

if the trunk won't open, make it open by cutting around the edges and usingf filler or something

IDK do whatever

ChevyRidinLow
02-27-2007, 07:37 PM
no problem...but hell no im not gonna just cut a hole in the model especially after i painted it. it'd be damn near impossible to get a clean cut...plus there's no actual trunk so it'd be a gaping hole w/ no bottom. plus that would mean removing one of the 2 screw holes that holds the body on

ChevyRidinLow
02-27-2007, 07:37 PM
plus wat in the hell would i use for hinges??? lol

Hobbes

It does look impossible to get a clean cut from the bed cover, not to mention you have to make a floor for it...

I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but you have to take some outside before my final say on it. Shouldn't it be sunny tomorrow? The paint job does look clean btw. :)
