Wow, very nice and realistic!!
Rob, are you going to build a car from a specific race?
Gabriele
I'm thinking of Monza? Lauda came third but it was enough to secure the World Championship.
Thanks everyone for keeping me motivated with all the comments!

It's too bad you didn't get comments on this on the other forum. I think you just knocked them dumbstruck with your skills. Althou the distributor is amazing with the lead boots, I found it just as amazing that you had numbers on each wire. I'd love to see this in real life, keep up the fantastic progress.

I think we all post for selfish reasons. I started my first wip here with my Enzo and about 1/2 hour later I was checking to see if anyone posted a comment. I guess that is human nature. Too bad that nobody commented, I think there are a few members there that don't visit here that would really enjoy this build. It's builds like these that motivate me to do better and I appreciatte you posting.

Another update
I started working on the rear brakes and realized that the brake disc assembly goes into the gearbox before you attach the calipers. :banghead:
I thought about dismantling the parts but what the heck, I've got a lathe! I'll just make new parts.
I normally replace kit brakes without even thinking but the Tamiya discs look pretty good painted. So I used a razor saw and removed the hub details from the parts. Here are my inside hub machined parts with nuts and bolts added, compared to the kit pieces.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0672.jpg
I then secured the discs in position and made the outside hub on the lathe and fit it all together
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0674.jpg
I actually thought while making the inside hubs that you would never see the detail anyway but I was wrong. Check out the nuts and bolts
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0675.jpg
I have had quite a few people ask about machined parts so I had better mention that I am making an extra set of all the machined parts described. Expressions of interest are welcomed?
Thanks again for the comments

Chad, I tried .7mm fishing line but that was too stiff for my liking, next the Modelers 0.9mm clear oil tube but that seemed a bit too thick (and too stiff). So I visited the local Spotlight store (craft shop) and found this stuff
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0680.jpg
It's very flexible and comes in a variety of thicknesses. It's the same as I used on my 1/20 312T3 but in 0.8mm so it looks perfect. Just put a drop of liquid cement on it and it clouds up giving it a realistic look.

LOL, i was just looking at this stuff about 2 weeks ago at Jo-Anns (craft-store). It had a different name but i think its the same. its really stretchy right? cool, Yours looks like its hollow-core on the engine which is why i assumed it was MFH. Brillant Rob! And thanks for confirming its the right stuff to use. Cheap and lots of different sizes. Keep amazing and informing.

Ok, another update
I had been putting off doing the exhaust because i knew it would take a lot of time. Eventually I had to start so....
Here are the original kit parts on one group of three outlets and a comparison to the original collectors and pipes. That is what I will try to achieve in scale.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0681.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0682.jpg
To start I machined some new collector pipes and cut of the plastic pieces and replaced them with the new metal bits. A quick test fit to make sure they worked as intended.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0683.jpghttp://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0685.jpg
I also machined new outlets which look much better than the thick kit plastic. These were glued onto the exhaust and blended in before getting a coat of paint. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Ferrari%20312%20T/DSCF0688.jpg

Mike, thanks for the compliment. The thread was done using a ultra-fine parting off tool hand fed to replicate thread. I just brought to tip in just enough to touch the surface then quickly wound the bit in towards the chuck. Obviously it doesn't work but the look is the important thing. Hope that helps? :screwy:

Next I'm going to have to start on the chassis tub. I have been wondering how to finish the aluminium, Alclad or Bare Metal foil...:banghead:
Thanks for following the build
here is a comparison between the kit parts and my basic machined parts made out of brass. The next photo shows the parts installed and detailed. The straps on the rubber boots are from Model Car Garage.

Just enjoy your work so much it's fun to watch you make all those parts maybe not as fun for you at times. Great work keep it up can't wait to see what is next. :)

Did you wind the springs for the suspension or have some on hand, or......
I cannot wind mine that cleanly.

Or are these the stock parts :grinno:?
The rear shocks look great, I spend some time with my lathe this weekend to make some for my MP 4/6 and now I have even more respect for your selfmade parts!!! The idea with the "thread" is great. I have to try that for my shocks :grinno: It's amazing everytime I read your threads I just want to go and start building...

thanks, rob. :)

Nice progress. The shock threads look a bit dicey in the closeup pic, but I'm sure it looks fine on the model. Is the adjuster ring on the shock a separate part? I'd like to see what you can do with aluminum foil on the chassis. Maybe use some steel wool to dull the shine, or spray with dullcoat? Just some ideas.

Ken, the adjuster ring is part of the rear shock not a seperate part. For that reason I had to use a very thin parting off tool to make the thread by hand. I got a bit of flex with the sideways movement and therefore a slightly rougher finish. It looks fine when on the model which is all that matters.
I'm thinking of trying the polished aluminium alclad on the chassis tub and see how it looks. If that fails I'll use the foil.

I used the kit springs so don't worry....I can't wind them that clean either :screwy:
Here's another quick update
The rear of the car will hopefully get a few looks and nothing is more prominent than the brake light. I made a copy of the kit part from aluminium and then made a replacement lense from Squadron clear thermaform using the new machined part as a template. You simply heat the thermaform over a candle then pull it down over the template which is held firmly in a vice. I then turned the lense holder on the lathe and clipped the lense in place. Some clear red paint completed the job.

Next the oil cooler needed some detailing. Once again I used finemolds radiator mesh #10 this time and added some spring clips.

Unfortunately I have 3 cubic meters of river stones and 5 cubic meters of mulch arriving for the garden tomorrow so I may not have another update until next week... (you've got to keep the wife happy :shakehead )
Thanks for the replies
