How do you disconnect the black fitting on the fuel filter? I got the other side off with the two nuts but i cannot get the quick disconnect fitting off. In my manual it says it's white but all I see is a black plastic part. Do i have to remove this or what?

well i been trying to get it off for about half an hour now and i cant seem to take the filter out of that black plastic round fitting. in my book and on here it says that the fitting is white or clear but all i see is a black one and it is small and has four tabs on it. please help.

I had the same problem and ended up breaking all 4 tabs. Be very careful I did try everything by fallowing instructins which did not help me at all because that quick connector gets dirty inside and tabs kept on breaking one by one on my GA :), so at the end when I did not have any more tabs left I had to cut the rubber hose and use another 5" hose and metal ribbed hose connector and 4 clamps (two on each side just to be sure) because of the high pressure. good luck

Dont be confused! :grinno:

The black fuel line is just the "female" end of the "quick connection".
The white plastic part on your new filer niple is the other 1/2 of the "quick connect". And who ever gave it that name should be kicked in the balls because they are far from quick.

It probly is road crap keeping it from releasing.:grinyes:

okay well i get that now but what am i going to be squeezing on the black quick connector to release the filter? shit i said "quick". i tried squeezing the black tabs with needle nose pliers and nothing moved. i can twist the black thing around and move it away and towards the filter (but only like a millimeter). i think i will go to sears tomorrow and buy that plastic releasing thing haha but i dont even know how to work that. jeez i am gettin a headache just changing the fuel filter. it has never been this hard for me.

you need to squeeze the black one and push it inside of the white one, and at the same time try to pull off the filter.

okay when i squeeze the black one i slide it towards the rear right wheel. because this disengages the four metal tabs. i think i got it now. but yesterday i tried squeezing the black tabs and everything and it wouldnt move. but i am going to try again today. thanks.

All I have to say is squeezing that black connector is not good. If it gets collapsed or damaged your filter wont stay in place and or it will leak!

Here is a picture from a auto manual.

And here is a pic of the tool that is used for the removal.

The white tabs are in between where "A" and the filter is, which is inside the black end.
If its a factory filter they might not be white tabs, could be black or as previously stated could be broken off!!

If the tool pic doesnt work, do a google for GM feul filter, it'll show you a couple different toos used for this.

yeah i think it is the factory filter b/c its pretty rusty haha. yesterday when i looked i didnt see anything white there. so the black tabs are part of the filter then. or are they part of the fuel line. i will be going out to look in a few.

This is what happens when the tabs break off.

The black section of the fuel line has a Lip inside that catches the latch piece inside. You'll need to figure out how to squeeze the plastic piece thats broken.

Like I said, I have just had to pull and turn reallllyyyy hard.
Might wear gloves to keep from tearing your hand open on something sharp :eek7:

well i went to sears and got that disconnect tool so i will be doing it tomorrow since today i was busy with work. that picture is helping me understand better. jeez all this work for a damn fuel filter. with the tool i think i just slip it onto the line and slide it into black connecter then pull filter apart. thanks for all your help and if i still cant get it i will take pictures of what i see.

Just for everyones knowledge, my old facility that I used to work at made the factory fuel filter for the GA's and we were instructed by Pontiac to change to white after some time. In this case, some of the GA's have black and some have white tabs. Just thought that I would let you guys know some info.!!
