Satin black help

Hi guy need some help here . What Tamiya paint is a match for satin black ?
not very good at matching black to me black is black and white is white .
Am doing the D'antin test bike which calls for satin black no mention of what brand of paint. So any matching paint would be help if there is no TS paint for it
would an automotive paint match it??

Tamiya makes a nice matte black, not quite flat but goes down really nicely and may give you the satin effect you want. The stock number is TS6.

If you want to try car paint, Duplicolor makes a good flat black, called Universal Flat Black, agruably the smoothest of any I've tried. The stock number is DS104.

Satin black is just another name for semi-gloss black. However, my experience with Tamiya X-18 wasn't particularly good - it just went on very very glossy, so the one I use mostly is Humbrol 85 enamel paint. I'm sure others will give you more suggestions on this.

use the tamiya xf1 flat black then use a model wax to buff it up it wont go gloss but a nice satin.

I've had very good luck with both Tamiya semi-gloss black (x-18) and Testors acrylic semi-gloss black. I use isopropyl alcohol for thinning. It seems the mix has an effect on the amount of gloss, as it does seem more glossy if I brush it.

By varying the gloss coats over a Testor's flat black you get any result you want.

Flat black + 1 coat of gloss = on the dull side
Flat black + 2 coats of gloss = semi gloss
Flat black + 3 coats of gloss = high semi-gloss (more glossy), etc etc...

Flat black + 10 coats of gloss = GLOSS ;)

I was thinking that semi gloss black was to shiney , and flat black was to dull.
will try these and see which one looks best to my eye , but my eyes been a bit blurry of late --to many late nights on the 360 :evillol:

Shayne, think twice before applying the decals on a non gloss surface. It's easy to get air undernieth the carrier film. I'd suggest you paint the cowls gloss black, attach decals and then cover them with a satin clear.

I would agree with above, decals need a glossy surface, or at least shiny, I have done this bike, the decals are not the easiest to do on gloss nevermind matt! therefor I suggest you get some ideas for the best clear coat for a satin effect, again maybe a matt clear coat then buff it up a bit! or if you mist on future floor polish and build a few light coats this will give a satin finish. Mr top coat clears are very good, you may want to also try hobby workshop flat or satin clear coats also. I think thinning a satin varnish and building it up in light coats would give yo a good effect also. You may want to try zero black base coat (from hiroboy.com), this is flat and gives a smooth finish, after this seal it with halfords laquer to get gloss surface for decals, then its a case of getting the satin finish back as I have suggested earlier.
