alright guys i just got a 91 civic hatch. the only problem is the car will not run properly. i got it to start today but it woulld only stay on if i gave it gas. the exhaust was making a sputtering noise but the engine was not knocking or making any noises. as soon as i let go of the gas the engine turns right off. I checked for sprk i checked the fuel pump new spark plugs and new wires but it is still happening. I took off the distributor cap today and it was all torn up so im wondering if this could the the culprit. So tomorrow im going to get a new one but i just wanted to try to figure out if that was the only problem or not..... any suggestions

It could be as simple as your throttle cable is misadjusted and causing the throttle plate to close when you let go of the gas. Try adjusting the cable. Are you throwing any codes?

probably one your problems....just make sure the tb isnt conpletely closing allowing no air to pass...cause that would kill the car instantly!!

thanks i'll try to look into doing that... it was throwing a code for timing but i redidi it and it stopped throwing the code so there are no codes right now.. the car starts and then it only stays on while giving it gas and as soon as i let it go it turns right off... it also sputters the entire time but the is no knocking noise or anything coming from the engine so im guessing that it isnt a major issue...I HOPE NOT

Take the intake off it and check it out...should be a slight angle to it...just mess with the TB while the car is on...I just went through the same mess on a ZC I swapped in my friends car but his is all dandy now...Idler screw was all screwed up

also are all your sensors plugged in and vaccuum lines in the right spot cause that would also cause that....lots of factors with a car just dying...forgot to mention is it throwing any codes, passenger side under carpet count the blinks of the red light in the lil circle of the computer?????

Well after checking your TB, make sure all your vacuum lines are hooked up. Your problem could also be distributor related and you may be getting no spark unless you hold the throttle. I remember having an ignitor crap out on me and my car would just shut off at idle unless you held the gas to like 2-3000 rpm.
