dealing with icy roads

i know in the northern hemisphere its not even into fall yet but the rust forming on my ride is starting to piss me off. this is primaraly due to the fact that michigan uses pure salt in the winter on the roads . so i was wondering what do they use in your location (if it snows)??

Bud, I am 2 states west of you and they use salt here in IL. However, I recall that when I was in Iowa, they used sand.

Here in PA they have tons of different ice removal techniques. If a big snowfall is forecasted, the road dept (PennDOT) will spray some sort of ice repellant (for lack of a better term) on the main roads. Once ice has formed anything from cinders to calcium chloride to salt is used to melt it. well, that's it from my side.

i'm not positive but the just toss gravel on the roads to give you traction, it may have some sort of salt to melt the ice but i'm not sure.
