I run the GTR2 game on my 160GB external drive and I think I'm loosing framerates when it heats up. Is this true?
talking offline play so no net lag.

Thats very unlikely, computers/computer components tend to be at peak performance when they get warmed up to operating temperature, it sounds like the computer itself might be lagging a bit, how much memory/processor speed? Describe what happens when it drops a few frames.
EDIT: LMFAO, I just realized what I said in this post. I don't think it would be your external lagging though, more like the computer itself.

Well when you think about it, doing anything on an external HD is going to be slower because you have one more path that it has to go through to get processed...not because of heat. But I doubt it's costing you more than 2-3 fps. Defrag the disk and do a clean up of your system, you may recapture the speed you think your losing.

Okay I'll defrag tonight, thanks a lot. In the meantime I'm using it on my C drive, but defragging should fix both drives.
Not sure what's funny but you know I'm not a hardware expert. Right now I'm running a 1.59GHZ Laptop...wait a sec shouldn't that be 1.8. Can't really remember it's 3 years old. 1.25 GB of Ram, Athlon 64 3000. I want 60 frames per second but i'm getting around 40. I get more fps on my new desktop, with the stock GeForce 6200. I have a mobile Vid card on this laptop, Radeon 9600/9700.

Check your refresh rate, kill all those useless services that are enabled....System Restore Service on XP will kill you (it's virtually useless unless you set a backup point every 2 seconds), theres a problem with the print spooling service that eats up the processor on some machines (might be just me, but I have all the updates that supposedly fix the problem)...

Check your refresh rate
He is on a laptop, so that most likely cannot be adjusted.
Your trying to game on a laptop with not so great graphics. Expect low frame rates on any game halfway demanding.

I'm surprised you even get 40fps with that setup..

Not every corner is the same, the fps fluctuates, a 60 could drop to 40 and rise up again, but with direct x7 and really low settings, you can get really good constant fps.
Soon i'm gonna test GTR2 off my Ext HDD and on my new desktop.

My athlon 64 3200+ 2.2ghz, 1024mb ram, and bfg 6600gt is lucky to swing 50fps with everything maxxed.

Drives work better when they're warm. Leave it in the sun.

I'm about to link you guys to a different forum, but only for the sake of information:
http://forum.rscnet.org/showthread.php?t=268628
that explains how to get better frames per second with higher quality settings. If you've done it all, don't worry then, but if you haven't, it doesn't take long.

I'd rather not mess with that, i get no lower then 45fps with a full grid, around 50-75 in dash veiw with a couple cars, and over 100fps in the rear 'chase' cam..
The game runs good enough for me.
