2005 Sierra, Grinding noise in steering

I get a grinding noise and can feel vibration in steering wheel only at slow speeds (parking etc.). Only 15,000 miles. Does it need lubrication?

I've got the same thing going on mine, 05 sierra, 48,000 miles. I just bought it, I'm going to try to get them to take care of it, afterall, it is a gmac certified used. I'll keep you posted when I get it figured out. It is annoying though... Like you said, just at real slow speeds in the parking lot...

I have an 05 as well. It appears there is a lubrication issue from the factory. It sounds like you column needs lubricating. It is a warranty fix. Take it to your nearest GM dealer and they will take care of it. I had mine done and all is fine now.

Hi all, I wrote in above, 2005 sierra Z71, 48000 miles. Well, I finally got around to getting the u-joints greased in my steering column. There is a joint on the inside of the cab, right behind the firewall. This one seems to be the culpret. I sprayed it with a high quality white lithium grease. Now keep this in mind, the problem doesn't go away as soon as the grease hits it, the vehicle needs to be driven around a bit for the grease to work its way into the problem spots. (Hint: rotate the wheel while spraying to get it real good. I put down a used towel and let the grease drip off this sucker. Needless to say, I shot the heck out of it!) I actually didn't notice it completeley fixed, (thats right, whatever noise was there is completley gone now) until about the 2nd day of driving it to work, approx. 15-20 miles later. This thing is seriously like new again, and if you've ever had this problem, you'd have bet that they would have had to replace the whole knuckle to get it tight again. Try the grease, I had impressive results!

FYI ~ I also had this same thing happen to my 2002 Impala about a year ago. The car has 100,000 miles on it, but just as I described above after greasing the knuckle/u-joint on the column on the inside of the car. The problem went completely away a couple days later!

On the impala I had to use the straw to squirt up into the rubber collar protecting the joint. On my truck the joint is a sinch to get at, just poke your head under with a flashlight, be careful though, it's so obvious that it could bite you. All you have to do is put up with the grease smell for a couple of weeks.
