Where I live there are a lot of people who race cars on the quarter mile strip on the street. I used to until one day in bad weather I wrecked my car while not racing, I was on my way to school. Now I drive a Chevy silverado, but I can still race it becaouse there is aldo a large number of truck races where I live, mostly shevy silverado, ss, and fford sport, or lightning. I race my truck even though it's all stock, and only a v6. but its quick for a six its been wrecked and after it was fixed somethongs that I don't know about may have been changed but anyhow it's quick and good to race for a quarter mile drag. I was going to put a cold air intake system in it that was made by K&N, but decided not to yet, I'm low on cash and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how I can make my truck quicker for very cheap.
thanks for your help. ???????????????

Hmmm...wrong section, but I'd say you have the right idea with the K&N CAI.

Thank You for your help. I'm srry I'm in the wrong section, but I didn't know where else to put it. my truck governs out @ 100 though, thats y I didn't get the intake, because my truck will govern put so quick that my truck will slow down and I'll get passed, does anyone know the cheapest way to set my speed limit higher ?

I would bet theres a chip that would do it somewhere. Do a google search on performance upgrades for your model truck and engine.....I had a friend back in the day witha 96 GMC Sierra had the 6 in it. He put an exhaust on it and an K&N drop in and it sounded real good and was pretty peppy as well.

make it quick for cheap, do some serious weight reduction
that out anything you dont need, back seat, a/c, etc etc,
cost , free and you might even make some if you sell what u take out ;)
or just looks at what slowprocess has done

slow process swapped engines and did almost everything you could, without turning the truck into a pure racing truck, if i recall.
i think his block alone costs a pretty penny.
time for a af search!
edit - this alone is takin from his sig and i cleaned it up a tad :
Mods-swapped in 02 6.0L,
TR224 cam,
Ported/Polished heads
Comp 918 springs,
3800 stall,
built 4l60e,
Eaton Posi 3.73 gears,
LT1 electric fans
nelson harness,
Nelson tune,
Hoosier 28x11.5x15s,
4 in intake,
dual magnaflow exhaust with cutouts,
Thorley LT headers,
33lb injectors,
Walbro 255,
nx wet kit now jetted for the 200 hit
anyone have the guts to figure out how much that is total w/o directly asking him?
my guess is about 4.5k+. and im not counting the cost of the motor.

Until you get better tires on it...leave the speed limiter.

K. Thanx. I have a new set of high rated 454/75 series racing tires that are fixing to go on my truck. I went ahead and ordered the K&N, but still don't know what to do to cut off my speed limiter. Any other help, and tips will be greatly apprediated.
Thank You. :smokin:

Drive downhill.
Let's look at it this way. You have a v6 truck, which you were hesitant to put in an intake because it costs too much. Not to mention, you've already wrecked it once. I suggest keeping it stock and saving for something more competitive, and in the meantime perhaps getting more experience racing in a safe environment...like at a track. Basically power isn't cheap. If you have to worry about splurging for an intake, the truck isn't gonna get much faster on an after-school job budget.
However, if you are interested in getting more power out of your truck, as said above, I'd look at what Slowprocess has done to his. I'd also check out the show 'Trucks' on Spike TV, usually around noon or so on Saturday mornings. They sometimes do power modifications to the trucks, but they have alot of commercials as well for truck websites and such. I can think of bullydog.com off the top of my head. You can check out those websites and the shows 'Hot Parts' for ideas and general pricing. Just my .02

K&N FIPK as stated earlier. Alot of times you could just buy used aftermarket parts on ebay. That would be my first course of action. Anything that clears up the restrictive stock exhaust system will free up some ponies.
If I were you i'd just buy a exhaust cutout for your stock exhaust system. That would most likely free up quite a few ponies, but make your truck somewhat loud (Not advisable to drive it around town, you will receive a ticket).

other than free mods i think pretty much the cheapest route you can go is a filter and CAI or a chip. that's just relatively speaking,, making a car or truck noticeably faster generally does not come with financial ease  :2cents:

i heard that before i got my cutout too, but i dont think you'll ever really receive a ticket for it. i've been driving with an open cutout for almost a year and have never even been pulled over and mine's a v8,, so on a 6cyl you have even less to worry about. there's cars with legal exhaust setups that are cam'd that are 10x louder than my car. you just have to cap it come inspection time or they'll def fail you

Now how the hell did I miss a thread with silverados and racing as the main subject?
In all reality, your best bet is to go ahead with a motor swap. I have a complete writeup step by step on doing a v6 to v8 motor conversion if you're interested.
As for my setup, its actually fairly inexpensive considering it dropped almost 4.5 seconds from factory. :grinyes:
Mods-swapped in 02 6.0L- $950 (heads to oil pan, used all of my stock accessories from my 4.8L)
TR224 cam,($400)
Ported/Polished heads($500)
Comp 918 springs,($150)
3800 stall,($475)
built 4l60e,($900)
Eaton Posi 3.73 gears,($100 used)
LT1 electric fans($70 used)
nelson harness,($100)
Nelson tune,($400)
Hoosier 28x11.5x15s,($100 used)
4 in intake,($100)
dual magnaflow exhaust with cutouts,($120)
Thorley LT headers,($328)
33lb injectors,($100 used)
Walbro 255,($110)
nx wet kit now jetted for the 200 hit($350 used)
There was a few other costs here and there(oil, tranny fluid, gaskets, etc),so adding up other costs, I think its safe to say I paid about $6000 to make a 16 second truck run 11s and still be able to drive it everyday.
You could look to spend alittle bit more on the engine since you'll have to buy a turnkey, but all the other stuff I purchased could come later(headers, nitrous, etc). Your main needs at first would be the motor/accessories/wiring harness, the custom tune, the tranny, and a good converter/flexplate.
