Oil Burn...

My '99 Rodeo has about 137,000 miles, and has been burning about a quart of oil per 1,000 miles since around 110,000 miles, or so. Should I not be so alarmed by this? Is there something quick and easy that a weekend hack like me can do to help this situation? I am trying to get the most out of this vehicle, so I am concerned that the situation may worsen before I get much further on in mileage.

If there are no obvious leaks and it's going out the tailpipe, I doubt there is much you can do short of working on the bottom end. Were the routine oil changes done? Do you see blue smoke coming from the tailpipe?

I have not been the best about keeping to 3,000 mile oil changes, but they have always been done between 3,000 and 6,000 miles, most towards the lower end. No, I have not noticed blue smoke coming from the tailpipe or leaks anywhere else.

The drain holes in your pistons Could be plugged up due to your higher mileage useage of oil. You could try some Sea Foam.

Read up on the link above. The EGR can cause oil useage.

watch is like a hawk. some folks use 1qt every 500 miles.

If it were mine, I'd be throwing in Rotella synthetic 5w-40 diesel/gasoline rated oil. This is thick enough to not burn off easy, but thin enough for cold weather climates, in which it could be used year round.

Easily found at most Wal-Marts.

Could also be used for up to 4-5k miles easily.

My last oil changed was with Rotella synthetic 5w-40 diesel and even add cd2 oil detergent to it. It is still burning a lot of oil, with in 500 miles I added almost a quart to it. My truck has about 117K on it. I have read all kinds forum about this issue but I can't find the solution to it. Right now I watch my oil like a hawk, afraid one of these day my truck will be on the side the road. I changed my oil almost every 3-5k. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

i would change out the PCV valve and clean out the EGR and EGR tube. this will help a little bit.

the issue is the drain back holes int he pistons are plugged up and the oil is then burning up. You aren't seeing smoke because the catalytic converters are doing their jobs.

i would also recommend shorter oil change intervals (less then 3K) and trying some seafoam. After that i would buy the cheapest oil you can find and get use to adding a 1/3 of of a quart every tank of gas. With gas prices over 2.50 a gallon you are only adding 75 cents to you bill to keep the full of oil.

Its a pain and it sucks, but it will keep the truck and rolling for another 100k.


I have 78k on my 2000 and I burn at most 1/3 of quart every 3k. And I have almost always changed my oil around 3k (along with running seafoam for 20-30 minutes prior to the oil change) and i clean out my PCV every 1500 (1 shot of carb cleaner does the trick).

There was a message on 4x4wire that said isuzu is now recommending 15w40 for engines that burn excessive oil.

I would not be adding CD2 or any kind of oil additives to an already robust oil, i.e. Rotella synthetic.

It may take a few rounds of using a thicker/different oil to see a difference; but if you start adding so many things to the crankcase, you could wind up causing more harm then good.

If your temps are consistently above 10F, give Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 a try; darn good oil and very robust too. I've yet to ever use it in my Rodeo, as mine only burns maybe 1/8qt in 3-4k miles - but I do use the Delo 400 in my diesel with fantastic results.
