"Limp mode"

Does anyone know what a 1999 2.2L Cav. will do when it is running in "limp mode" a.k.a. "Limp home Mode"?

Ok, a little more info..
I fixed a passlock problem i was having by unhooking the wires from the key cylinder. Now the theft system light stays on while driving, but no other problems. The dealer says my car is running in "limp mode" and should not be driven like that for extended periods. From what i have read, limp mode will cause a vehicle to run at reduced speeds, lower rpms, poor gas milage, and only shift up to second gear. My cav. is not doing any of those things. This leads me to doubt the dealers observation.

Disconnecting the sensor wires at the ignition lock cylinder should not force "Limp" mode (more technically, "Backup Fuel and Spark Mode"). What it will do is interrupt the circuit for the PassLock system module and may eventually lock out vehicle starting. I'm not certain if the '99 would have a PassLock or PassKEY system, but disconnecting either can have a similar effect.
