1992 LeSabre-Front End Noise

Last few days I have a loud whining (humming) sound coming from the front end which increases the faster you go and decreases the slower you go. It is not engine related because I can put the car in neutral and rev it up and there is no noise. Is this possibly transmission? The car shifts fine. Could it be C.V. joint? Are they difficult to replace. Are there any other bearings that could be gone?

Welcome to AF. Sounds like a ft wheel bearing, get it up in the air, safely, see if there is any play in the wheel/hub also you can run it a 20 mph or so while off the ground, again caution, and see if you can hear the noise, or let a shop do this for you.

Thanks, sounds like a right front wheel bearing. Looks like I will have to replace the whole unit. Is this a big job? Do I have to be concerned about ABS.

Its not a HUGE job... you must have the tools...
Remove the tire and allign the bolts that hold on the bearing assembly..
Also You have to take off the transaxle nut.
Remove them and encourage the slightly pressed in assembly out with a chisel or something to get it started.. Keep track of the sensor wire..

I replaced one a few years ago. It was a little tougher job than I had expected. I just put in a salvaged assembly because the bearing was pressed in and it didn't look like it would come out. Also, the new bearing assembly was very expensive. Don't forget to have that large socket on hand (36mm) to remove that nut.

Im not sure they are pressed in..
I know the corrosion makes it very tight. I took a cold chisel and worked around it and walked it out.. The new one went in pretty easy after clean up. The bolts pulled it in.
