Chrysler to Chevy???

Hi I was just wondering if it's possible to put a 383 with a 727 trans from a 1968 Chrysler Newport in a 80s Chevy Caprice? I have the opportunity to pick the engine up cheap if it's possible and would be worth trying. Please any input would much appreciated.

If you're doing it because it's cheap and your car needs an engine, stop. Stop right now and hit the e-brake, because with all of the modifications that you will have to do to get it to work in the car - let's just say that you can build a great small block with it.

First, the 383 is a big block and is heavier and much wider than a small block Chevrolet, or for that matter, a big block Chevy. Secondly, those engines have the distributors located in front of the engine, meaning the oil pump is at the front of the block. Further translated, the oil pan is deeper in the front to accomodate the oil pump and will most certainly interfere with the engine crossmember. Then there's the fabrication required for the engine mounts, the transmission crossmember, the driveshaft (that A727 is a LONG beast), the transmission shifter, hood clearance, radiator hookups, etc. It's a lot of work for an engine which is obsolete and not more powerful than a lighter small block 350 (or for that matter a stroked 383 SBC), when you can get the SBC that the car was designed for.

I'm not anti-Mopar, don't get me wrong here, but that 383 belongs in a Cordoba, not a Caprice.
