92 metro. Started leaking gas when full. It leaks out of the secondary tube that runs along side of the main fill tube. Tube has a little hole in it. The rubber coating that covers it has fallen apart and it is rusty. What is this tube for? Can I disconnect it? I see that I could take the hose off that comes from the tank and plug it. I could also plug the tube. Any thoughts.

If i'm not mistaken, that tube is a breather hose for fuel vapor from the tank? Look at this pic...Is the Hose your asking about # 602 or part of the filler neck # 638? If it's the small metal tube that runs along side # 638......Your gonna need it! What I would do is: Disconnect the metal main filler tube and the rusted secondary tube from their rubber hoses, then remove the gas cap and take out the bolts that hold the filler tube assembly in place, remove the whole assembly from the car. Then get a "Gas Tank repair" Kit from autozone, advanced auto etc.... Clean the rust off the secondary pipe and all the dirt and grime off both pipes, follow the instructions and repair the secondary pipe with the repair kit. Reinstall the filler pipe(s) setup and all hoses. Then get a can of 3M spray undercoating from the auto store and spray it on the both metal filler tubes to prevent any further rusting in the future! Only other option is to find a "Non-Rusted" filler tube setup from a junkyard and replace yours with it.....Too bad though, I had a nice clean one a month ago but that Metro was stripped down and then off to the crushers it went.........:shakehead .

Not sure from your post whether the metal tube is leaking or the smaller diameter
rubber hose is punctured.
If the hose is leaking, just replace it with Gas Line hose! If the metal tube leaks then
if you have an Auto Wrecking Yard, I would go buy another used filler tube.
If there are "Pull-n-Save" type places where you can take stuff out of cars yourself,
you can pull out the filler tube yourself.
Not hard to do at all! Take some tools along and wear old clothes....
There are three bolts holding it in place by the gas cap, then a clamp further
down holding it to the frame. See picture below.....
If no Wrecking Yards or Pull-n-Saves, you can order one from Rock-Auto.
Should be no problems getting one.
See the very first Thread in this forum labeled "Important" for places to order
Metro parts.
If yours is rusted thru, I would not try to fix it....it will just give you trouble all
the time. Gasoline leaks are not something to mess around with!
Spray the replacement when you get it with Rustoleum.
Here is the one from my '93 Metro - someone had tried siphoning with a garden
hose, got it stuck and cut it off leaving a chunk inside!

The breather hose keeps the tank from "Burping" up Fuel as you fill it.
Air bubbles can leave w/o having blobs of gasoline coming back up while filling.

Good luck!

Yeah it is part of the filler neck 638. Now I see what it is. Use is for when filling up lets air out of tank. I just happen to have a junker sitting out back that I can swipe it from. Thanks for the pictures.

I've sucessfully fixed 2 of our own vehicles fuel tanks with zero leaks in the past with the repair kits..... And they lasted for years. The key is proper surface prep and a EMPTY fuel tank. The secondary filler tube doesn't hold fuel all the time like a fuel tank does unless your filling the car up to the end of the filler neck with fuel but if you have a spare filler neck setup....why bother reparing it?..... Replace it!
