Is the P light lit on the dashboard when you are having problems getting it out of park? Do you hear a clicking sound when you press on the brake petal when the car is in park?

park neutral safety switch is most likely bad

Yes the park light is lit. The only time that I hear the click when I apply the brake it shifts out of park. I was guessing in the ballpark of CDC's reply. Is this something that is easy to fix or will a dealership have to repair this? Thanks for the replies!

Probably a broken brake light switch. That switch powers the brake lights and the shifter interlock relay plus the cruise control disengage circuit. Easy to replace if you can fit on your back between the firewall and seat

I just experienced the same problem and fixed it yesterday, it is the stop switch that is located right above your brake pedal. I called the dealership parts dept. and it was $35. Once I put in the new one, my brake lights starting working as well, but before that my brake light bulb was burned out, so if your brake lights still don't work, check that bulb. It cost about $7 at AutoZone, part number was 7440, forgot the brand though, lightning something. Good luck.
