Soon I will be getting a AEM Cam Gear for my D16Y8. My question is should I leave off the cover on or cut the top portion of the timing belt cover? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Obviously you've never looked closely at your engine. The timing belt cover is 2 pieces, and the way it mates to the valve cover, if you don't reinstall the the top side cover the cam gear is left perfectly exposed. Thats what I did on my car.

I would reinstall the top cover for normal driving , if something fel down in the thier kiss your t. belt bye bye.Not that it would be easy to fall in there but theres a small chance something could. What i did was trim the lip that fits under your valve cover so just the 2 bolts hold that timing cover on, then you can change your timing but not leave that hole open 24/7

you shouldnt get a cam gear unless you have an aftermarket cam. It really has no purpose except to look cool. since the y8 is a single cam, if you advance the cam timing, you are advancing both the intake and exhaust and that is not a good thing. a cam gear is used to dial in the exact timing of the cam if you buy an aftermarket one because they are usually like 1/2 tooth off.
