does revving ur engine at a standstill damage it?

just curious cuz i have heard so many different opinions. u know when u r at a light and u rev ur enginge for whatever reason cuz it sounds cool or some chicks are walking by....does that damage ur engine in anyway? while the clutch is pressed or she is in neutral of course.

As long as you don't rev it too high, it won't hurt anything. If you red-line it in neutral, it's only a matter of time before you damage the valvetrain. Many newer bikes have a separate rev-limiter set at a lower RPM when in neutral to prevent this, but older bikes don't.

Unless you have a single pin crank V-twin, it doesn't sound cool.

Sure it does!
My Seca got me 3rd place in a Loudest Exhaust competition. :D That was before I discovered that there was no baffle in it, though.

I had a GS750 with a Kerker 4 into 1 with no baffle that sounded kinda cool...OK, I retract my statement...

Revving the bike in neutral won't cause any problems. It's no different than doing it in gear, and the same rules apply for what is and isn't acceptable. It does, however, let everyone in earshot know how much of a squid you are.

I disagree Dealsgap. Free revving an engine at high RPM is very hard on the valvetrain, especially if you crank it towards red-line. Many newer bikes (and most cars) have a separate rev-limiter that kicks in at 65-75% of actual red-line in neutral or when the clutch is engaged to prevent valve train damage. Loud doesn't neccessarily mean it sounds good. Loud V-twins sound good, loud in-line fours, not so much. It's the same as a loud exhaust on a V-8, V10, or V-12 car/truck, that sounds good. A fart can on a Ricer, not so much.

I disagree with that statement in many ways. It all depends on what car you are talking about, a larger 2.4-2.6L four, esp flat four sounds quite nice with the right exhaust. Listen to an STI with a cat-back, they sound great.
On the other hand, I hate muscle cars with straight pipes and harleys with straight pipes. I think it makes no sense to have a bike/car so loud and that can be heard for miles.
It all boils down to what you like to hear, personally most high-flow exhausts on anything I think are too loud. I especially hate when people rev their bikes at stop lights...it makes you look like a tool and like you think you're hot shit. Maybe a small rev every so often, but I'm talking like 200-400rpms above idle...not anything that most cars or people will notice. That's more than enough for me to enjoy the sound of my v-twin with a yoshi pipe :)
The only vtwins I like to hear are sport bikes/street bikes/supermotos...RC51, TL1000, mille, ducati, SV650, SV1000, etc...I think those engines sound the best with an exhaust and with the right exhaust they aren't usually annoying loud, even at redline.

Sound of course is subjective. I won't say that some people don't like it, as there are many fart can ricers out there so someone must. The Subaru is exempt, as it is a boxer engine, not an inline 4 so it's sound is totally different. I personally think that Civics, Sunfires/Cavaliers, and any V-6 with a fart can sound rediculous. My Harley has factory pipes right now, modified slightly so they bark when I get on it. I have a set of Rinehart pipes ready to go on, which are quiet at low RPM, and make wonderful noise when cranked on. I totally agree that Harleys with straight pipes are stupid. My dad had a Sportster with straight drag pipes, and you couldn't ride to his right or you'd go deaf. Mine is quiet enough that I don't piss off my neighbors in the morning, but I get attention if I nail it (especially from kids, they hoot and holler and encourage me to be obnoxious, :evillol: ).

Sound is very subjective.
I think loud bikes, regardless of engine configuration sound really annoying, and I've been riding since 1975.
Most of the general public thinks its really annoying too, so IMO avoid unnecessary loud noise. Few things ruin the image of motorcyclists more than loud pipes.

i thought 1 of the reasons for loud pipes was for safety. to be heard a bit more by cars and such. i hate starting my bike late at night because with the choke on i know my neighbors are being disturbed. the bike came with a muzzy. im just learning as i go along.

Hmph... noobs:uhoh: ... lol... u can wear ur engine if u rev it as soon as its on... as in; before the oils had time to lubricate it... let it run for a minute to get the oil through... more lubrication=less friction=less wear... lol

Lol... I call everyone a noob... gamer... lol, ment no offence by it... and I did answer your question to the best of my ability... I did say it depends... your the one who failed to mention the circumstances not me. E.g. Revving ur engine after riding it for 10 minutes or you've just turned her on (lol) and you sum babes walk by and u revv her nice and loud to get there attention... but there u go... lol...

hey dude, right now your the noob. you might like to try to introduce yourself first and let us get to know you before you come on in mid conversation and (from our point of view) act like a knob.
everyone here has there place and different experience levels. Es is also new to the boards but has already proven himself to be intelligent enough to ask the right questions and get the forums motivated in conversation.
whether or not you think he asked his question clearly or not, your response had an abrasive tone.
this forum has many experienced people and therefore a lot of respect for those with the knowledge has grown over time. each of us has an area in which we are best at. stick around and learn who to play with and who will squash you.
you may want to type your replies in a jargon we can all understand too. its all well and good to show your personality in your text but many of us are old codgers who couldn't be bothered translating shit. its hard enough for me (and others) outside the USA.
by the way Welcome to the boards. one speeding ticket issued :evillol:
