I have an 88 Suburban 4x4 Diesel 4spd. There is not lockout hubs. My question is, step by step, how do I engage 4wd? Also, How do I know if it is working properly and driving all 4 wheels? TIA.

Shift the shifter to 4W and make a good sharp turn.
If it has crow hop in 4W drive then it is working.

I had an '88 Blazer with "auto" hubs. I always stopped with the tranny in neutral before I shifted into 4wd. Let's see, that was 19 years ago and I can't remember if you could shift it on the fly. This I do remember! You have to drive forward to engage the front hubs and you have to drive backwards (a real PITA) to disengage them. Hope this helps...............Steve
PS: What MT says is correct, although I wouldn't do a sharp turn on dry pavement. A medium turn at slow speeds will tell you right away, through the steering wheel, if you're in 4wd.
