Michelin & Bridgestone both make excellent tires. There are so many different criteria for judging tires that it is hard to say what is absolutely best. However, the RE-040 is not Bridgestones best (or even second best) performance tire. For a good comparison of the max performance Bridgestone & Michelin tires check out this link:

Be aware that max performance tires are full of compromises: harsh ride, noisy tread, high wear, hydroplaning in deep water, awful low temperature traction, etc. But they rock for a nice mountain drive in the summer. They may not be what you want if you use your car as a daily driver.
The RE-040 seems to be a decent all round tire for daily use so far. I did experience some hydroplaning in standing water when Hanna dumped 6" on us over 2 days. I definately won't be taking this car out in the snow, my Talon AWD can handle that chore.
