I just purchased a 2001 Mazda 626 and have been doing a little reading about it. Now it is the v6 engine and I see where they recomend premium fuel, 93 octane. I have been running regular with no problems but am wondering about adding some octane boost to it to bring the regular up to around 93. I am thinking this would be cheaper than buying the high test as you all know the price of gas has gone through the roof. Anybody heve an opinion on this idea as to if it will work or not???

I think if that's what 'they' recommend then that's probably what you should do... but it's your car so do what you want! I think the higher octane burns more efficiently (ie emissions) and probably gives the car peak performance. But if it's cost prohibitive then running the lower octane will still get you from point A to point B.

Around here the premium is maybe 20cents more than regular? So for a 12 gallon tank I'm spending an extra $2.40. A 'good' gas additive (octane boost) will probably run that or more and will only last one tank. So mathematically you are still better off just buying premium...

I don't know the size of your gas tank (my wife's 96 626 seems to take between 12 and 13 gallons) but you can do the same calculation to answer your question exactly.

Up here in Canada we are in a little different boat. Last night I filled the Mazda up [it was just about empty] and it cost me $50.00 . Our regular gas is .88 cents per litre and there is 3.78 litres per gallon or roughly $3.50 per gallon. Our high test is.10 to 12 cents per litre more or 45 cents per gallon. Thats why I was just sitting here thinking about octane boost and if would be worth trying. Oh yes the milage I got off that 50 bucks was 435km or 261 miles city driving, short trips and most of the time snow and 10 degrees F give or take a few. Will get better when spring gets here and will be able to figure it out better. Tnx for reply..............
