I went out to start the caprice on a cold morning and thats when it began.I got it started by just patting the gas.The only way it will continue running is by doing the same.If you let off the gas or give it a lot it will quit all together. It sounds like its running out of fuel.It has a new fuel pump and filter. Also the exhaust is getting hot.(Glowing red past the converter all the way to muffler). My first thought was the catalitic converter or muffler stopped up. But after talking to a couple of mechanics they say fuel problem.Cylinders not getting enough fuel and getting to hot. There is no check engine light on. Now I dont know if the electronics on a 93 were advanced enough to pick up a bad converter? Is there a precedure that you can use to determine if the converter is bad? Also any other input is welcome.
It is a 93 caprice,5.0 engine, and has about 120,000 on it.

Is there at least 11 PSI of standing fuel pressure?

A lean fuel mixture can cause hot exhaust, but not like you describe, that's way too hot and you're in danger of burning a valve.

If the computer won't put out any codes, you should rule out a blockage somewhere in the exhaust or converter. A relatively simple but dirty task would be to drop the exhaust at the converter and see how it runs. If the converter is original at 120k, I would replace it almost regardless.

Bt, The weather here is single digits so its been to cold to mess with.Have a work shop but its not where the car is. But I will try checking the fuel pressure. 11 PSI is what it is suppose to be?

11-13 is ideal. The absolute minimum is 9 PSI, but in most cases that is insufficient.

If the cat is glowing red, that's a good indication of a RICH condition - check those injectors!
