Service Engine Light and loss of power

I was going to piggy back on cleonq post but decided to start a new one. About two weeks ago, the check engine light came on after shifting from 3 to 4 gear (after accelerating up a hill). It felt like someone bumped me in the back (or a misfire) and then the light went on. I've had it happen before and the code always popped up P0101 (MAF). I would clean the MAF (along with the air filter ad throttle body) and within a few miles the light would go off and stay off. Since it has been frigid cold here, i have had a chance to get the code read or clean the MAF. The day before this happened I put a bottle of HEET (drygas) into the tank since they were calling for sub zero degree weather. I assumed the HEET in the gas may have caused a misfire and triggered the MAF. Fast forward to Wednesday, i bought two bottles of Techron to put in the tank. thursday morning on the way to work, the check engine light went off. Then this morning (Friday) on the way to work, same thing happened, shifting from 3 to 4 (ater accelerating up a hill) felt a bump and the check engine light came on.
I'll go have it scanned tomorrow to get the code. Can anyone speculate what might be going on? the transmission is shifting fine otherwise.

If you haven't yet replaced your crankcase position sensor, I would put that at the top of the possibility list. But it is just a wild-ass guess given that it is a common cause of unexplained problems.

considering I am having the same problem that cleonq had, I don't think it's a bad guess.
With 135k miles on my 2000 Olds Intrigue, I'm at the point where I have to make the decision to either fix all the problems I have or trade it in. this I will fix but I may need new wheel hub assembly during my inspeciton this month. Possibly will need new rotors and rear struts. The driver seat springs (underneath) have fallen off. Need to do a couple of maintenance items. Otherwise it has been a decent vehicle.

You could always go to the savage yard for a *new* front seat. The rest of the repairs will cost some dough but it is all relative. The real question is how long with the engine and tranny last, and that is unknown even if they have been well maintained. So, a lot (most?) of people buy a new vehicle without seeing how far the old one will really go because they like the new car smell and the ego satisfaction.
My '99 has 92k miles and I say that i will keep it as long as i can. It's easy to say it because the Intrigue is a fun car to drive and gets great gas mileage. However there is a point where to say good-bye to an old friend and move on. I don't know what the record mileage is for an Intrigue is but it is probably over 200k miles.....maybe a lot higher.

I never thought of a salvage yard for the seat. I'll make some calls tomorrow. I have not been the best with maintenace except the oil, coolant and brakes. I'm due. My tranny fluid and spark plugs are overdue.
I didn't mentino that my fuel guage does not work properly. Thank goodness for my trip odometer. A lot will depend on if I get this new job what I do.

Got my "service engine soon" light checked out. The code came out P0101. Obviously something is making misfire. We'll see

Did you change the plugs and wires at 100k?

I just wanted to let you know that my problem was solved with replacing the crank shaft position sensor. I did get an error code indicating that that was the problem. Also if you replace the sensor but don't do the learning procedure it might give misfire codes. I think there is another thread on that on the forums.

Thanks cleonq.
Jimmy Olsen: Haven't chagned the plugs (no wires) yet. I'll have it in the gargage later this month for the inspection. I'll ask the mechanic to change them for me. The front ones seem pretty easy to c hange, it's the rear ones that scare me.

Update: After clearing the code oover the weekend, the light came back on Monday. I had mistakenly said it threw the code when accelerating up a hill and downshifting. It happened this time as I was going up a slight incline where the transmission may or may not try to downshift depending on speed. The only reason I knew it was an incline is the car slowed down. When i sped up, it threw the code. It seemed to happen right at the point the car was deciding do I need to down shift or not. I haven't checked the code but my guess is it is P0101.
