Black Smoke

I have a friend with a 97 civic si and his car is blowing a black sute and it leaves a black powder on his bumper, what could this be? to much air? to much fuel? please help me with this problem.

too much fuel, which means your engine is running rich. Check/replace your plugs and wires, and air filter to see if that helps.
