well, my main hobby/job is racing Karts for Advanced Karting of Miami and next season test driving open wheel race cars. so when I tell them that after I tell them I built model cars they shut up pretty quickly. however, I just tell them its what I like, I dont play with them, I just display them. alot better then what alot of people are doing these days.

It really depends on the culure where you live whether car modeling is a "child's hobby" or not. As I understand it, modeling in Japan is considered a "gentleman's hobby." :)

In this country (Singapore), everyone has the same hobbies (shopping, going to the movies, travelling, etc). Go figure.

My ex-colleague asked me that question when I bumped into him outside a hobby shop a few days ago.

Him: "Why do you build car kits? Isn't it a childish hobby?"
Me: "Can you build one?"
Him: "Probably not."
Me: "Oh. You mean you don't have the motor and cognitive skills for a kid's hobby?"
Him: "..." *walks away in a big hurry*

And my gf thought I was mean to him.

:hehehe: :hehehe: :hehehe: :hehehe:

:bloated:  I still am a kid  :bloated:

But I would say to them, can you make one look as good as this?*shows them a photo of one* They would probably say "nope", then I would end it like twoninety did...So you don't have the skill to complete a childs hobby? Screw em all! I bet you they still do some stupid childish things anyway!

My favourite reply now is...
Show 'em a pic of my Ferrari F1-2000 and then say 'childish? but I sold this one recently for £125! A that kind of money don't you wish you could make them?' to which most people say 'errm yeah suppose so!'

Story is a friend of mine who is a big F1 fan(and I mean BIG) saw my Ferrari about 2 weeks ago when he came over and offered me £125 for it and I thought f**kin' hell have it, show me the money and the deal was done! Problem now is he wants me to build him a Ferrari F2001 in 2001 sponsorship decals and 2002 sponsorship decals (vodafone).
Great £125 a pop =£250 that'll get me about 25 kits!!

I worked with a guy who found out I raced radio control cars, what he didnt realise was they were the nitro type cars. He thought it was the most childish thing and started slagging me over it (well at least he tried to slag me over it). I knew he played bowls (the grass type bowls that is normally associated with arthrithic pensioners), so i slagged the crap out of him over this and told him to back to hitting on old women on the bowling green, well the guy that sits next to use nearly fell off his seat with laughter. I showed this guy pics of my car and the bodies I had for it and all of a sudden he was like WOW thats really cool and completely changed his tune about it.

It was funny though every time I slagged him over something he would be all " ah go back and play with ur cars" but he was such a fool thinking i wouldnt let it go about the bowls.

Anyway its funny how peoples impressions change when they see some fo the work that is done on these models and all of a sudden its liek WOW thats amazing, or I wish i could do that but I wouldnt have the patience

I find that most people that ask me are the ones that smoke 20 smokes a day and get rotten drunk every weekend....i just tell them At least i have something to show for my money"

It doesn't bother me anymore, we all have our own hobbies.
Once i show them a kit set in a box that is un-made, then show them the work that goes into one they soon change there minds.

Most people that see them sitting in a box cant beleive that they start out as a bunch of parts all un-painted.

Right on brother P-man...no seriously you hit the nail on the head there. Everyone has there own hobbies, what do most people think of people who collect stamps or go 'train spotting', its not my cup-o-tea but its like the old saying 'whatever floats your boat'.

BTW Im one of those who gets drunk every weekend and smokes 20 fags a day, well i used to b, down to 10 a day now. God women are powerful creatures all together....damn it where is the receipt for her....J/K I love my fiance very much

I really don't care what people think, this hobby has pretty much been part of my life since I was 5 years old. Anyone who comes into my house will see my hobby room and collection and I don't mind. Everyone has something they do that is satisfying and therapeutic for them. For those who would poo poo my modeling hobby, would they also shun my mountain biking and guitar playing hobbies? Most of those people don't have any talents or are too lazy to do anything or just jealous. I like the hobby because I love cars and art, the two come together in modeling. If you think it's childish, then:flipa:

Most people say"I did that to as a kid" when i say that i build modelcars.
When i ask them why there not modeling anymore, I'll get the answere it's a dificult hobby.
So most of the people now how hard it is to finish a good model.
I also think that most kid's don't have the time, money ore patience to make a good looking kit.
And a nice kit isn't for kids to play with, they will destroy it.:D

Interesting read.

Will try to remember some of it for when I get home to the missus!!!!
Generally wait till she has a night shift and the kids are asleep to sneak an hour or so in.

Thanks for the 'tips'!!!!

When people ask funny questions or look funny, when car modeling is the subject, I always say I do it because:
it relaxes me; :bloated:
I'm a perfectionist;
I win prices in different countries - BE, NL, UK, GE, CH; :D
I sell them every now and then;

but most of all, it probably saved my marriage. I'm married for 15 years now, still with the same woman, and that's because I stay home glueing and painting plastic, instead of hanging around drinking beers and chasing women...
and most females will end the conversation by telling their buddy, "there you go, you should take an example on this one... "

your answers; Iusually tell people "because I'm pretty damn good at it!!" They see my work and they can't argue with me about it! I also tell people "At least my wife and children know where I'm at". I have used most of your answers from time to time and they're true! Plus I can say I have modelling buddies all over the world!!! Literally! Plus it's just plain old fun!!! :D :D :D

Hey, I drink and smoke almost everyday, but I'm sober enough to spray paint with alcohol and cut plastic with exacto knife!
Well, I've cut down on smoking. By the time my son grows big enough to build models I should be smoke free and he'll inherit all my unbuilt model kits.

I think most men have a childish hobby. We still like playing with toys of some kind even after we grow up. :smoker2:

[QUOTE]I think most men have a childish hobby. We still like playing with toys of some kind even after we grow up[QUOTE]

You are right there, I guess some (very sad) people would also class some of our 1:1's as childish toys.

But hey, we all need something to spend our hard earned cash on, be it big or small, can't waste it all on the family (and bills!!!!).

I get grief for my other hobby as well... I ride bikes. Which isn't so bad, except I dress in a suit of armour and thro my self down hills on bikes. People seem to find that childish as well. Guess I can't win:D

Very interesting. I never really thought of this hobby as "childish" or "kids stuff". Mainly coz the tools we use can be dangerous (knives, cutters, solvents, etc). Definately not something you'll want your kid to mess around with.

It also takes patience, planning, coordination and a whole lot of motor skills to build a kit to the "P" Standard. :)

So when someone like my a**face ex-colleague made a remark like that, I just socked it to him. ;)

Peace and keep building!

All your life as a bloke you will have a "toy" in your life, unless you dont drive.......But anyway, I am a kid now but I think I will still be doing models for along time to come because you get so much enjoyment out of making a whole heap of un painted, un assembled & un used plastic bits into something so good as a nice looking model car/truck/bike/boat or whatever...its good fun!:smoka:

Yes, this IS a childish hobby.. I woke up last night and found my 17-month old son working on my Calsonic Skyline.

Here's the proof:

Just imagine your average day, then take away models, Wake up, Eat Watch T.V, Eat, Watch T.V, Eat, Watch T.V, Sleep. That is pretty much my lifestyle without models (or the PS2 for that matter:rolleyes: ) but with models, at least I do something constuctive.

BTW, Yes I do have friends and do go out :D .
