Welcome to AF!!
If you are handy with tools piece of cake. Just remember to disconnect the battery and use an non sparking punch when removing the locking ring. You will also need a fuel line connector tool otherwise you shouldn't have any issues.

Thanks for reply, have since found out that gm pump is recommended. Both dealer and local mech. priced it at 460.00. But I can purchase myself same pump at 260.00. Although dealer will install for 120.00 which I don't think is too bad. Although now that I see how it is changed, and our present pump is working fine, we started out to replace gauge sensor. So the next question is does the pump have to come out to replace the sensor? thanks

Yes. Here is a fuel pump assembly where just the fuel level sending/float unit was replaced.

That answers that for me, if its coming out, need to replace pump. Car has 120000, its due. And hope to get couple more years out of her. Car has been great except aggrevating electrical problems. Headsup display sometimes erratic, lost back speakers, washer pump went out. Brother has 03 grand am and has had LOTS electrical problems, dealer replace one of the fuse blocks. thanks again for info.

We have members, me included, that would probably disagree with arbitrarily replacing the complete fuel pump assembly if the problem is just the fuel level sending unit but it is your money and decision. Replacing it is no big deal and anyone with some DIY capability can do the job. About 1 hour total and you will save on labor costs reducing the bite. You can confirm whether the fuel pump is good or marginal by running a fuel pressure test at the Schrader valve located on the fuel injector rail.
On the HUD all you have to do is get to the electronics part and touch up some poor solder joints on the HUD circuit board or replace the photo cell sensor which controls dimming. On the rear speakers maybe one of the speakers is bad which is a common problem.

I replaced my fuel pump a couple of weeks ago and it it not hard at all. I will say that it needs to come out and the fuel level indicator needs adjusting badlly as it shows empty when it still has about 6 or 7 gallons left. I usually just fill up when I have about 350 miles on a tankful of gas.

Thanks for weighing in Wally. And what was your mileage at the time the fuel pump was replaced? I figured it would be good annecdotal info. :grinyes:

321,000 miles, Bob. It's still running pretty good for an old nag. Got almost 323,000 on it now. I keep my fingers crossed every time I get in it but it keeps on trucking. I'd be tempted to buy another used one with about 150,000 on it if I could find one that was treated as good as this one. Not sure I'd have as good of luck though.
