i recently aquired a civic w/ stock b16a2 and it's about due for a timing belt change honda quoted me around 400 but i took it to a rice shop that does motor swaps and the like (owner has a 6g w/ widebody kit and god knows what in the engine bay) they quoted me around 180 but also recomended something to do w/ the valves be done at timing belt change which brought me back up to 400. anyone have experience w/ this reccomended matinence?

well i'm guessing when he said something with the valves, he ment adjusting them, but this can be done at any time and it shouldn't cost $220 more..it takes about 1hr30min so unless hes charging over $100 an hour that really doesn't makes sens..but that is a good thing to do on car every so often, every 50,000km-100,000km would be good..and since you change your timing belt every 100,000km well i'm guessing he tought of doing it at the same time!!..but like I said, 220$ for adjusting valves is way to much.

Had "joe-bob mechanic" change my timing belt, and he zoomed me with a new fuel pump as well, and I paid $280 for the job.

you likely don't need the valves adjusted...in my 3 civics, none of which had under 100K, I have nevere had the valves adjusted. The mechanic is either 1. ripping you off by saying it needs done and doesn't and you'll never know the difference, or 2. he screwed up your timing and is now telling you that has to be done. Either way, unlikely that the valves need adjusted.

True. You probably won't need your valves adusted; especially if there is no ticking or knocking... at least prior to the timing belt change. I would never trust a rice shop.
