Removing window tint

Just tried to get my son's 240SX(sorry about that) inspected here in RI and they said everything was fine except the back windows and hatch were tinted.
Anybody know how to remove or where I can find instructions for removing.
The rear hatch has defroster in it - so razor blade method would not be advisable.

the best method i have found was to make scratches in the tint between the defroster lines and douse it with "goo gone" it did the trick rather nicely! (when i got my car the windows were tinted 5% all the way around exept the windsheald that was tinted 35 (yes the whole window) they guy who had my car before me was a dumbass

You are right about the hatch glass. Don't even think about using razor blades. Pick up a gallon of ammonia and some plastic scrubbing pads from your local grocer. Don't buy brillo or scott brite as they will scratch the glass!!!
Peel as much of the tint off as you can by hand, usually you can get most of it off. To remove the residue you will need to use the ammonia and scrubbing pads. Don't try this unless you are in an open air enviroment and I recommend having a fan moving air also. A garage does not count as an open air enviroment, pull it into the drive way. Dampen the scrubbing pads with the ammonia and work it slowly. It will eat up the remaining glue, but it will take a little time and elbow grease.

I got a similar problem, except its not window tint, its overspray. The crappy ppl who painted my car got overspray on all the windows and i cant see out of them for shiat. Should i just use paint thinner or is there something better? Thanx, and for the window tint, would a heat gun work? Just a thought, im a moron tho, so watever.

When my old tint got removed, it took most of my defroster with it, so I can't use it anymore. Would have to buy a whole new rear glass...

I second that one.... take your car to another (more professional) shop and get them to do an estimate on the cost of fixing your bad paint job, and then sue the place that screwed it up for double that plus your legal fees!

As far as removing the tint.... I've found the ammonia idea to work the best... and yeah, make sure you got pleanty of air flow while you work!

As for the paint overspray on glass - as long as it is on the OUTSIDE of the glass, you can also use a razor blade.
Paint thinner and other liquids can get on your paint and other places that you won't be happy with.

Too bad you dont live in arizona, i think its legal to tint the windshield there

The best way to remove overspray is to use windex and steel wool!:D

if the window tint has been baked on the glass for a few years my best advice is take it to a professional tinter. they have a method of sticking a garbage bag type thing to the tinted glass, then heat gun to warm & they pull it off in one sheet glue & all. this method take average of 4hrs depending on glass size. sometimes it can be cheapier to replace the whole glass when it comes to a tinted rear defrost window.

if you have a lot of patience you could try it yourself, but most likely if you do complete 100% removal then most definately your rear defrost is no longer working on all lines. i had the luxury or removing 8 year old tint from a 3rd gen Camaro. talk about a huge window, after about 10% done i called my cousin(glass installer) and he hooked me up w/ a new hatch w/ rear strut supports, & new trunk lid(raised spoiler) $200 installed. needed paint to color match, no big deal

I got window tint off with brake cleaner, a razor blade, and about 3 beers. It has a defroster so I was very careful.

It's a pain in the ass.

Regarding overspray, I'd go through the gamut of solvents and you'll find one that works eventually. I wouldn't recommend steel wool (scared of scratches and it breaks up and gets everywhere). The harshest abrasive thing I'd use on glass is scotchbrite pads and I'd be worried about that.

The easiest way i have removed overspray from windows is windex & a new razor blade on a handle & it's easy to wipe clean after scraping.
