Last week the battery went bad causing a voltage drop which in turn caused the computer to get stuck in stupid. Simple fix once we figured out the problem. Now the automatic locking and anti-theft systems are no longer automatic. Called a local dealer and was told that the system needed to be reprogramed ($50). Is the dealer making business; is there a DIY reset that can be done at home? Thanks

actually did your autohubs work exactly before the battery swap? they do have a tendency to have the rubber hoses that lead to the wheel spindles go bad.and shouldnt have any computer control associated at all if your auto 4wd does not work then the hoses are gone or the vacuum switch is bad. most likly the hoses though

the anti theft reset button is on the a wire behind the center consul on the floor near the drivers right foot. once you find it here are instructions to program

Kia Sportage Factory Keyless Remote Entry Transmitter Programming Instructions.
1. Open driver's door and turn ignition to "ON" position
2. Locate the programming button on wiring harness pigtail, behind the left side of the center console (to the right of the gas pedal), next to the RKE module. (feel around under the plastic wall)
3. Press & Hold the button for 15 seconds. The horn will sound 3 times when it enters programming mode.
4. Press the lock button on the transmitter. The horn should sound once to confirm the transmitter. Repeat for any additional transmitters up to 4 max
5. Turn ignition to "OFF" and test transmitters.

Sorry, I guess I was not specific enough. No keyless entry involved. The auto-lock when turning the key to start and the auto anti-theft by pressing the door lock when exiting the car is what is no longer working. I have a Bulldog remote start kit with the anti-theft system relay (part #775) but have not yet tried to install it. Again, thanks for any / all input.

All of that is controlled by the ETACModule...(ELectronic Time and ALarm COntrol Module) "The Electronic Time and Alarm Control Module (ETACM) is located in the instrument panel, just above and to the left of the glove box opening. The ETACM is accessible after the glove box and lower trim panel are removed." There is no "reset" button.

.. The auto-lock when turning the key to start.
I suppose you mean all doors would lock by themselves at key START?... I do not have that option on my 2000 (not an EX). you can look at shop manual and diagrams using
http://www.kiatechinfo.com/default.asp but I could not see any "start" input to the module....so I'm a little confused with this.
IN any case, if any door, rear gate or the hood is improperly closed (or its "closed" switch contact gone haywire), this inhibits the device .

.. the auto anti-theft by pressing the door lock when exiting the car .. no longer working.
Well ..I'm just questioning which is normal: on my 2000, the anti theft is activated only when using the key to lock the car, and not when by pressing the door lock...and that is what is said in the shop manual:

"The Theft Deterrent System can be activated whenever all of the doors are CLOSED ... and either the driver’s or passenger’s lock cylinder contact switch is turned to the LOCK position using the ignition key. The horn will make one quick sound, indicating the Theft Deterrent System is activated. Locking the doors with the door lock knobs will not activate the Theft Deterrent System."
DO you have the anti theft activated when using the key to lock the doors?

Before the battery problem the doors would automaticlly lock when the car was started. The car did not need to be put into gear, just starting it would lock it. The anti-theft would also be active at this time. unlocking the doors while the car was still running would deactivate it, but to turn the engine off and then unlock the doors the lights and horn would go off as soon as the door was opened. Once I got the sequence down it was very convenient; before getting the sequence I more than once announced my arrival home in the wee hours of morning, not well received by others in the house.
The doors now will all lock and unlock with whatever is done to the driver's door lock and the anti-theft can only be activiated using the key in the driver's door. Thanks again
