Hi Im new to this so be gentle.LOL.. I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with about 75k. I bought it used about a year ago. Anyhow, about a week ago the Heater fan started acting weird. At first it wouldnt work on High number 5 on the knob, but it would work on the lower 4. Now it works when it wants to, sometimes it works, most of the time it doesnt. The car is still producing heat but i just cant turn it on to blow any heat around in the car. This is a major problem for me right now cuase it s like 10 degrees outside and i really need some heat in my car. The rear defroster works just fine.
I took it to the garage last week and they looked at it and said that it was I think they said it was the Control Switch for the heating unit. And that it was a dealer only part and that it costs about 400 dollars. Today the garage called again to let me know that they found the part :shakehead and wanted to know when I could bring it in and get it replaced. I asked how long I would need to leave my car for ( heres where I think I need the help) the mechanic said he'd like to have it for a few hours in case when he changes the control switch if that doesnt fix the problem he can look further. This really makes me nervous and mad at the same time. Didn't I take the car in and have it looked at for a reason? Why would I pay 400 dollars plus labor to find out that that isnt the problem? I could really use some suggestions if there are things that I could do myself to determine whats going on. I dont have any gauges or testers to test output etc. I'm thinking that i should check the fuses that have to do with the heater/fan an see if that could be the problem. I am also thinking about taking it to a different garage, an actual Pontiac dealership and paying them to diagnose the problem. I'm definatley not taking it back to the first place (even longer story). :banghead: Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
I also have a question about the display on my radio/cd player. It is the factory unit and everything works but the display where the clock is. It doesnt work at all. Is there something simple that I can do to fix this. I really dont want to go into changing the radio/cd player.
Sorry the first one was really long.:grinyes: Thanks again.

Welcome to AF.
It would help to identify which climate control system you have. The ACC - automatic climate control CJ2 or manual HVAC? A common problem on the manual system is the blower motor resistor or the fan itself. The ACC systems have a blower motor control module.
On the radio clock display there is a lamp that can be replaced but the radio must be removd to do the work.
