I have read the other threads & have found nothing that describes what I have encountered. My cougar is a '99, 2.5 V-6, with manual transmission. A few weeks back, once the car was warmed up(driving about 15-20 minutes) the speedometer would quit working. At this point the engine would run erratically..surging & slowing on it's own. The problem progressively got worse...check engine light came on giving a VSS code. I replaced the VSS but this did not solve the problem...still no Speedometer :banghead:

Check the VSS wiring and connection. If the new VSS is working and the wiring is fine, a scan tool will give you a speed reading when the car is moving.
