Recall

I recently called Mitsubishi and gave them the VIN number on my 1991 VR4 to make sure the transfer case and other recalls had been performed. All they would say is that there are currently no recalls.

Does that mean the recall expired or that the car was fixed? I can find no record of service for this car at the dealership yet all other paperwork is there including Motor Trend Car of the Year for imports, 1991 etc.

It only has 21,000 on it.

Anyone know?

in short, yes, there is a safety recall on the transfer cases for the VR4/TT trims from 91-93. the dealership doesn't know what they are talking about. ask to speak to a manager. they should be able to tell if the transfer case recall has been performed on your car.

Spoke with the manager and he ran the VIN and said my 91 VR4 had no recall and no work done on it. He said mine was not included in the recall. I did not find anything about this situation in a search.
I also spoke to Mitsubishi headquarters and they said the same thing but the forum never speaks to this issue...why would mine already have that c clip in it but others not?

very interesting. did he say WHY your car is not included in the recall? i was under the impression that the transfer cases in all 91-93 stealths and 3000gts were under a safety recall. some cars have already had this recall performed (a new transfer case was put on the car). others have not, and still others have had it performed several times. this is a SAFETY issue. due to a defect in the design of the transfer case (from 91 through 93), they are prone to leaking. when the fluid leaks out, the transfer case will lock up, which will lock up your drivetrain. if you are driving when this happens, you could have a serious wreck.

so what exactly have the dealership and mitsu headquarters told you? the answer to this game is 'don't take no for an answer.' ask for details, everything. if they can't explain it to you, either they are 1) lying, or 2) don't know, and ask to speak to someone who does know.

but please find out, as i'm am truly curious, why your 91 car is supposedly NOT included in the recall.

Okay...the records at Mitsub headquarters say it was replaced and they gave me the dealers number.
Talked with the dealer and he said they changed the fluid but that was all on the date given by the headquarters. Said if it was not leaking, that was all they were supposed to do. I asked if the c clip had been put in or anything and he said no.

It could be that this car is not leaking because I don't think it was ever DRIVEN. It only has 22,000 on it and is like new--really. Maybe if no one ever stomped on it, it would not leak.

Suggestions?

your transfer case may not be leaking now, but when it DOES start leaking, make sure you can step through all the bullshit and run-around the dealership and Mitsu Headquarters is giving you, so you can get it replaced without much hassle. i recommend getting a print-out paper copy of the dealership's records to what they have done on your car, with respect to the transfer case. i.e., get in writing that they only replaced the fluid, an NOT the transfer case.

true. the transfer cases tend to start leaking or break when launched above 3500 rpm. however, i have known people who replaced their transfer case with a new one (recall), and had not launched it at all, and the new one still started leaking again.

are the dealerships responsible for replacing a t-case after it has already been replaced if it starts leaking again?

very true. as i stated above, this is a SAFETY recall. if you don't care about your safety and wanna see what happens when your drivetrain locks up when you are cruising down the highway at 60 mph, then you can just take crap the dealerships dish out.

i know one guy on 3Si who has had his transfer case replaced 3 times by the dealership under the recall.

i have a dodge stealth tt, i was wondering, if i brought it to a dodge dealer for the t case, would they work on it, or do i have to bring it to a mitsu dealer?

Are they going to put in a better transfer case that won't leak and if that is the case, why have there been repeats.

Also, at what rpm does the cut off kick in, btw? I would search if I knew what the hell that was called. My RAM cuts out at 105 mph, my Trans Am at 162, my 3000GT never went over 150 so I don't know the cut out in that is was auto.

since its a dodge car with mitsubishi parts, you'll probably have to take it to a mitsubishi dealership. best way to find out is to call a dodge/mitsu place before you bring it in.

the guy i was talking about, he had his transfer case replaced BECAUSE it was leaking or just flat out broke. ya, i agree with you, it makes no sense to replace it before it starts leaking. cmon now, its common sense. the dealership has no obligation to replace it if its not leaking, evidenced by what they told you: your's was not leaking, so they just replaced the fluid.

but no, they won't put in a better transfer case, but rather a new one of the same design. however, the transfer case does have a bracket is supposed to prevent it from shaking so that it will be less likely to crack/leak/break. but the stock bracket is crap. several 3S aftermarket companies make their own, better, transfer case brackets.

the VR4/TTs do not have governors. rather, they are drag limited to something beyond 155mph, IIRC.

long story short

All t-cases have a recall, if they dealership says no, they're full of crap and they are just trying to get out of work. Fight with them on it, maybe even take matters to the next level, or find try to find another dealership.

Stealth's will have to go into the dodge dealership.
