OBD Diagnostic Reader

Hi everyone. I purchased a 2000 740i about 3 weeks ago and have enjoyed it immensely so far. It has 108k.

This evening I had my first worry. On the way home from work the “CHECK ENGINE SOON” light appeared. I know this is a OBD notice. I don't know if it could be weather related or not as it was about 25F.
I would like to determine myself what it is before I rush off to a mechanic. Can anyone recommend a simple and inexpensive OBD diagnostic reader? Thanks.

R5/FCX-II (http://www.peakeresearch.com/code_tool.htm) - not the R5/FCX-II-16 cuz that will not work with the 2000 740i.

I did find out. As I hoped, it was a fairly minor concern. I found code P1174 "System too Lean (Bank 2)".

Good job! It sounds like you know what you're doing.......

but...I'll comment anyway for other readers. System too lean (not enough fuel getting to the combustion chamber) can be caused by old/worn outfuel pumps, old and clogged fuel filters, a leak in the fuel line, or even knackered injectors.
