WIP - Customer's Slant Six-Powered Lotus Super 7

Well, the customer is buying a Super 7 in real life soon, and was looking for a unique engine to drop in it, so I suggested a Slant Six--he decided to have me build one in scale first, to see if he likes it!

Engine is a Ross Gibson resin kit (it's fantastic, btw) and the kit is the usual Tamiya Super 7. Gonna have to do a lot of measuring and cutting to get it to fit...

BTW, is it too late to enter this into the Super 7 Group Build? :icon16:

Only if you don't finish it by the closing date.

Did some hacking to get the motor to fit. It's obviously quite a bit longer than the Cosworth, but it's also a little bit taller, despite being on a slant. So it's going to sit lower down in the chassis, which is obviously good, and I cut the floorpan and cowl/firewall back a little. It even fits under the hood now!

Indeed. Haven't finished cleaning up the cuts yet, which is why the engine isn't glued in place anyway. :p

interesting choice of motor. Looks good so far. Are you going to do webber side-draft carbs on this one?

No sir, keeping the Slant Six "Hyperpak" headers and intake, with a small roots blower on top.

Got the blower sort of figured out... it's a tiny roots, probably a 4-71, off of an AMT '32 Ford. I'm gonna try and base it off the blown Slant 6 you see below... not an exact replica, but the same idea. Looks like the air cleaner'll just pop out of the hood--perfect. The manifold behind it is fabricated from square styrene.

Got the engine together now, other than the blower belt and the oil filter. Turns it does NOT clear the hood, so a hole will be cut in the hood to clearance the carb, blower and its pulley.

They always look better with the blower peeking through the hood :-D

i wonder how much more a blown slant six weighs than the cossie, and what that would do to the handling of the 1:1 car...

tigeraid

I don't really think the owner cares :p

It would be significantly heavier, but the engine will also have a lot of its weight further back than the old 4cyl...

Decided to go with Dupli-color Charcoal Grey Metallic instead of standard gunmetal, clearcoat has been applied but not sanded or polished yet. We decided to go with the modern look and remove the fenders as well.

Looks like a pretty cool project--that blower case seems to be an especially good-quality part. Keep us updated (though I'm sure you don't need to be told that)

Had to make my own steering column to hold the wheel, since it's originally a right-hand drive car. I shaved all the gauges off the right side, put a speedo and oil gauge on the left, I'll add some more I think. Seats are out of a Mitsubishi Evo, just had to shave some material off the outside edges to make them fit.

Just thought I'd show a pic of the for sure completed engine... Accessory belt came with the Ross Gibson kit, added a little air cleaner. Gonna throw the rest together soonly.

The air cleaner looks very nice!

The steering column seems too thick IMHO
What's the deal with the seat backs? Are they hollow?

tigeraid
04-12-2007, 07:19 AM
yes sir, they are, gonna assume they're sort of "bare bones" racing seats with just a bit of padding. And once the cage and belts are in place, I think it'll look quite natural.

And I think the column just looks too big because it's white and verything else is black. I'm not necessarily going for the original Seven look (just the bare steering shaft.) I think it'll look okay when it's together and painted.

Threw a bunch of the suspension together... coilover shocks were painted silver then detailed with a red Sharpie. The rear shocks got the same treatment. Then dropped the engine in, using square styrene stock to make new motor mounts. It sits awful low below the car, there's not much clearance--this car wouldn't do speedbumps! :nono:

And here's the wheels I'm likely going with, though I'm not sure on the colour yet. They're from a Fujimi Mine's Lancer Evo.

Mounted the stock headlights, stole some rear disc brakes from I *think* a Revell Corvette, got the Evo VII wheels mounted (painted Dupli-color primer Grey with clearcoat)... Mounted the little windshield too. Also added the photo-etched grille. Now to start bending styrene for a rollcage. :uhoh:

Hey that looks very stylish..I like it... nice look with the wheels too..I'm planning a paint scheme soon that will be a solid flat gray color buried under clear

Customer decided to go with a cage, so it can be a street/road course piece. So I started mocking up 0.100" styrene rod, bending it with candle flame. Also installed a new master cylinder beside the battery with brake lines, and some more underhood detail work... gotta do the seatbelts next.
