1988 Camaro starting problem

This is a bit of a weird one. So when I bought this car the steering column was in sad shape to say the least because it had been stolen multiple times and the only way to start it was with pliers. The important part is that it did start as recently as yesterday. I got a new steering column and put it in there, and just in case something like this happened I connected up all of the wires to make sure that everything worked properly. It did although I didn't try to start it. So today I hooked everything up, got in it, tried to start it and nothing happened. Except for the following
-When I turn the car on there is an incredibly high pitched whining sound
-The turn signals no longer blink, although they do turn on
-The radio no longer produces sound, although it also turns on and scans
-The RPM gauge is now permanently in the middle of the red line
- The oil pressure gauge jumps when you try to start it

I think that about covers everything. We tried grounding it as well as unplugging and replugging all of the circuits. Any ideas? thanks in advance.

The first guess would be the ignition switch position adjustment or linkage.

The linkage rod and tilt sector/finger need to be engaged correctly for the ignition switch to operate properly. There is also a bit of slack in the mounting position of the switch itself to allow fine adjustment.

It is also possible that the ignition switch is damaged.

You'll have to analyze one circuit at a time to try to determine the cause.

If the car has an MSD or other CD-Type ignition box, that may be the source of the whine and the reason for the tachometer action.

What engine/fuel system/transmission are in the car?
