Steering Wheel Legality

I just read the linked Steering Wheel Legality thread in the FAQ Sticky. This is to clear up any confusion that may have caused and to create a clearer guide line.

Overall the laws governing replacement of the stock steering wheel with an aftermarket one are going to be different state to state. As a general rule of thumb, any car to be driven on the street, that originally came with a driver's side airbag (located in the steering wheel), can not be replaced by a steering wheel that does not have an airbag. Vehicle that did not originally have them can be relaced with an aftermarket steering wheel. Once again that is only a guideline. To be completely legal and ensure that you don't have to worry about a cop pulling you over and measuring your steering wheel, you should obtain a copy of your state's laws governing vehicle equipment.

For Federal Requirements, I was able to find this on the NHTSA website concerning the disconnecting of an airbag. In short is say states that It may be done legaly under federal law but is not recommended.

" Deactivating an air bag can be dangerous. It should not be attempted by anyone but a qualified mechanic. Although Federal regulations now permit dealers and motor vehicle repair businesses to disconnect air bags, NHTSA strongly discourages disabling except in special circumstances, since air bags used with safety belts almost always provide better protection than safety belts alone."

This information can be found on the NHTSA website at

When searching for local and state regulations, remember that most local and state laws can be found online, and that you should be able to obtain a free copy of any state laws.
