I'm pretty sure the front crank seal is shot on my '96 Tracker with a 1.6L, 16 valve, 4 X 4, but I'd appreciate a little info. Is that seal mounted in the oil pump housing? And, is there any way to keep from having to drop the front differential? How 'bout it guys, got any news for me? Thanks up front!

yes the seal is located in the oil pump housing. As for dropping the front diff, I'd have to check the procedure in the service manual.

Go here and you'll find everything in detail that you need to know. (You don't mess with the diff)

Wouldn't it be possible to just gouge out the old crank seal and insert a new one by removing the crank sprcket and belt guide?

That's exactly how it's done, see the link on my last post where you can search out all the details and potential problems that you could run in to. Edmcm

Hey, I really appreciate your info. I searched that link, but I couldn't find a post on that procedure. I would think that the only screw-up would be if the bearing, or engine bearing surface is damaged. Thanks again man!!
