Aoshima Delorean (Back to the Future I)

I'm just starting on Aoshima's Delorean and thought I'd put up a WIP to keep me motivated. I have a feeling this one's going to take a while to do properly. My wife loves this movie, so I'd better do it right!

The instructions are in Japanese, but I found a paint chart here (http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/stuff_eng_colorcharts_gunze.htm) so I think I can cope with the rest...

The parts are all pretty clean - a few sink marks and ejector pin marks, and very little flash. It all seems to go together pretty cleanly. The figure is going to test my painting skills, I think. And those wheels will need some kind of a wash. I'm not going to use the rear light decals - I'll paint them. There is also the option of the licence plate from BTTF II, but I'll stick with the OUTATIME one, because it's cooler!

The body - not bad, but will need some filling and sanding. I'm going to leave the moulded-in wires, as I don't have the confidence in my scratchbuilding yet to grind them off and redo them. I still have to work out how to paint the body; since I don't have an airbrush, I'm stuck with Tamiya spray. I was thinking of Flat Aluminium, with a satin clear over it - any suggestions? I'm also toying with the idea of opening at least the driver's door - the figure is in the pose of the movie poster (http://www.impawards.com/1985/back_to_the_future.html), so it would be good to display it in that configuration.

The badging in the rear bumper is going to take some work. The moulding looks kind of wonky, as you can see, but the reference pic shows that it's all wrong anyway. I'm thinking of cutting the lettering out of some thin styrene, and glueing a backing sheet to it.

This is my progress so far. The chassis is painted - that took a long time to do accurately. The front suspension components are ready to be installed, and the rear parts are primed and ready for assembly and painting. These parts are all mostly the mechanism to make the wheels swivel from 'driving' to 'flying' mode. It's going to need some EzyGlide to work smoothly.

Tamiya has a spray called "Bare metal Silver" its part of their "AS" line of paints geared towards aircraft builders. I believe its supposed to look like aluminum though I haven't used it.

Yeah, or any of the Model Master aircraft paints will provide a good finish...they have a beautiful bare aluminum color that would look awesome...

Wow, a lot of these are popping up.

Here's my advice, and it was passed on to me. Testor's Metalizers Stainless Steel. Takes some work, but dang does it look good. Check out my thread to see it.

Finally some progress to report - not much, though. That thing called life getting in the way - work, home life, new guitar amp to be broken in...

I'm still at the 'dreaming' stage with this one, I think - many ideas on it, without the confidence in my skills to pull it off, or even how to do it! I'm still wanting to open the drivers door on this, although I'm scared of screwing it up. And I'd really like to get rid of the moulded 'wires' down the side and make my own - same deal. Gonna have to bite the bullet here, I think.

Most of what I've been doing has been scribing panel lines, opening the vents at the back, and closing the holes around the wheel arches.

I've also detailed the wheels with a wash and some valves. The pics don't really do them justice: they look much better in the flesh.

What do you reckon? Should I cut the cables off and open the door?

The wheels look great! Tricky decision about the wires, but if you can make them to the same size as the moulded ones, then I'd say go for it!
