Have less than 10,000 miles on rebuilt transmission in my 94 4X4 trooper. This week only 1st and reverse work. The touque converter locks up real well in 1st but when the transmission shift to second the RPMs go up but the transmissions acks like it is in neutral. If you stop the car it will take off great in first gear but has the same problem all over again when it shift to second. Removed the pan and replaced the filter. The pan was very clean and the fluid looked almost new without any smells. If I press the winter mode switch which will make the transmission start in second it acks like it is neutral. Is their an easy fix for this or is it time for another transmisson rebuild? Would I have been better of replacing the automatic with a 5 speed manual?
Thanks for your time.

what happens if you shift manually thru the other gears, is it at all possible?(or does"NO" just about cover it).
has your check trans light come on, or check engine light?
it could 'just' be a solenoid. the problem is, most trans shops will probably say rebuild. but certainly check out what they have to say.
there is the *outside* chance maybe the mode switch is causing you grief. one way to check is to start off with the gear shift selector in a different position instead of D drive. the trans will still go through the gears (if its working) of course, but the contacts in the mode switch will be in different and can make *all* the difference. try it in all positions to start off in --

If I start out in Drive the transmission will start out fine in first then when the transmission shifts to second it is like going to neutral. I can start off in any gear from a dead stop and first will always work just fine but going to second the transmission mostly slips. Once I am moving and the transmission is slipping I can go to 2nd, 3rd, or OD and it still slips. Going back to 1st why the transmission is slipping locks the transmission back into 1st gear.

well that's clear...and not good, is it :(
i'm at my limit, except to tell you what you probably already know : don't drive it if it's slipping, you can do more damage. i know there are a couple of shift solenoids in the electronic part of the trans, but not enough else to help you. someone else more knowledgeable may chime in with a 'fix'.
good luck
