so i'm thinking of doing a foreign exchange program for a year. i was thinking scotland, the three universities i check out (Stirling, Edinburgh, and Strathclyde) seem to have beautiful campuses, they have accredited engineering programs, and they all have rowing teams (essential for me). does anyone know anything about these universities?
I originally wanted to go to ireland but my university doesn't have any partners in ireland so that was out of the question. has anyone done any foreign exchange? been to scotland? anything related to this thread at all. humour me, i'm bored as hell.
edit: check out this pdf, scroll down a bit to see the campus, it's got a f@cking 9 hole golf course, i don't golf now but if i end up going there i might have to pick it up. http://www.external.stir.ac.uk/documents/undergrad.pdf

I say, if you can afford it, go for it. When I was in Thailand, there was a Scottish teacher, he was a bit weird..but thats just one man. Just make sure you like the food before you leave, I didn't know I hated Thai food before I left

You can have those if you want, but there's other food as well.
Had some short tours of Scotland last year, people were friendly (if hard to understand for US citizens), and the area was beautiful. Go for it.
edit: oh yeah, and there are plenty of nice pubs...

If I was chosing between those 3, it would be Edinburgh. I spent a week in Edinburgh when my step-sister was finishing her doctorate at Edinbrugh Uni, awesome city with tons to do.
Only thing, are you prepared to deal with Scotish weather?

Edinburgh IS beautiful and there's a lot to do there. But it's also touristy in the summer.
What, does it rain in Scotland? Is it windy and cold, ever? :evillol:

i just hope beef is ready for British drinking expectations. the Scots can drink most people under the table.
be wary of cider, it has a lot of alcohol and a lot of acid (it's made from apples) a common side-effect of drinking a lot of it is losing control of some bodily functions. people can unexpectedly and uncontrollably s**t themselves from it.

Seeing as how i'm canadian, i don't think i'll have trouble with that one lol.
as for the drinking, i'll be practicing alot before going (not just for that, but i'm in university and i'll be of age in may ;) ) And the weather probably won't bother me, as long as i can row. if the weather is bad enough to cancel rowing enough i'll be kinda pissed.
i think i'm really just looking for something different, a new experience. i've lived in the same house for my entire life, moving out next year, but i'd like to go somewhere completely (or at least very) different from what i know.
BTW how do the scots compare to the irish for drinking ability?

Edinburgh is nice. It has a real charm to it. Though be aware that the weather can be truly miserable...

they're about the same. the Irish just have more of a reputation for it.

Scotland?
Thats like a mini-america (no offense to Scottish... or Americans). I mean, I would like to experience an absolutely different place and culture, such as China, Egypt, or South Africa. It would be alot tougher, but it would also be very interesting and educational to see how people live in completely different cultures.
Check if your school offers trips to India, India has some very reputable engineering and tech schools such as the IIT (India Institute of Technology) schools.
Put a hold on rowing, and give Cricket a try. :)

haha well i'd probably try some stuff, but seeing as how i'm on the university rowing team, i don't think i'll just stop for a year. not to mention they've probably got a decent program plus it's somewhere different to row. i mean i love rowing but i'd like to see some different scenery every once in a while.
and as for completely different clutures, i just want something different, not completely different where it'll take a while to adjust. i'm only there for 8 months or so so it won't be very long. plus, i'll probably be in the military after university so i'll be going around, and i want to do some traveling after that before i get into a career, so i've got plenty of time to emerse myself in other cultures, right now i just want something that isn't like home but something i can get used to quickly.
