Something sings in front

When I give it a little gas and hold it steady, espedially on a smooth road, I hear a little sing in front. Most noticible about 35mph but there at any speed. It stops when I release the gas. Anybody know what this is? Is it something that will get worse and cause a problem. I'm going on a long trip in a few months and don't want to face problems out of town. 1996 Lumina 3.1 - 30 thousand miles.
Thanks

Could be a lot of things.
Are you pretty convinced it's produced by movement, you don't hear it if you just hold the engine rpms in nuetral at the same level as where it occurs when the car is moving?
Would you characterize it as a whistle, squeal, moan, buzz, hum, etc?
Also open the hood with the motor idling and see if you hear it, and if so, try to locate the general area it seems to come from, and tell us what you find...

Oh...check your fluids too, particularly power steering and transmission...

No, I know what low fluids sound like. This sounds like a bad rear end only in the front. It sounds like a power transfer sound somewhere.

Back to checking the transmission... At 30,000 miles it's due for a change of oil and filter, even though the manual says otherwise. Given that it's 11 years old, it's really overdue.

I've been wondering about that. You're probably right. I'll get that done this week. Thanks.
