buying a '01 325i for performance?

hey guys, looking arround for a nice bmw that i can put some performance into, and thinking about an '01 325i (M54), but not sure if it would be worth it or if i should be looking at a totally different model. my price range is arround 14-17k USD, anyone else have an '01 325i that would recommend me purchasing one aswell or different one?
