my mum's giving bullshit that she and my dad might not pay for me to go to the college i want to go to (UTI Orlando) but they can afford a brand new XK convertible.
my sister gets money from them on a silver spoon, but they might not even loan me the money to go to college.

dude thats rediculous haha, if you go to UTI or Wyotech (I almost went to UTI but persued law enforcement instead), you're going to VERY good school, and the one in orlando is one of the best for sure. Don't let anyone get in your way, if you want to go to UTI you're going to UTI. But it would kind of make sense if she was going to a VERY expensive college. Becuase then they would HAVE to give her money because of the payments, but its still bullshit. I got the same thing from my mother, so I just joined the military...free school for me..:icon16:...and I'm sure you know that some mechanics can make 60k a year...i mean damn...thats sweet cash for two years of school man...

I'm sorry to hear that. But I only understand if they have to pay for it now. But it's rought that they're delaying your dream bro, but now you'll just have to be more independant and apply for financial aid or get any kind of tuition assistance that you can. I know that UTI wants students so they are very willing to help a qualified person get enrolled....

i need to stay there as a resident for 5 years, then i can apply for citizenship. i'm going to the US embassy on monday morning to find out about all this. shit, it's overwhelming.

If you're going to pay for your children's education, for fucksake pay for it without conditions.
When I was your age, my parents tried for a long time to force me into education and career choices I had no interest in. Now they regret doing so.
Go with your heart. Do what you want to do. It may take a little longer without their help, but it'll be worth it because you'll be happy and successful, instead of wallowing in some job that you don't like.

They're not trying to push me into what they want me to do. maybe they're just disappointed that i have the IQ and grades to do all kinds other crap. it's just that i'm totally passionate about cars, and that's what i want to work with.
my sister's following what she wants to do as well, she's doing a masters in forensic science.
there's no way i'm giving up on this, i don't care if i have to work crap jobs for the next 5 years before i can secure a loan to pay for the college, i'm doing it no matter what. i'm going to the US Embassy tomorrow morning to find out about US residency, i'm 18 in 2 months so i want to fill in all the paperwork and if i can't give it in until i'm 18 then i'll get the train there on my birthday and i'll try for approval then. i think i have a decent chance, no criminal record, good grades and all that. an i want to study and work in the US.

Oh, they're not? Well they're certainly discouraging you from doing what you want, which amounts to the same thing, doesn't it? Sorry, getting a bit wound up but that's my parents' approach. Pretty soon you'll probably get the "just stay here, get a good job in xxxx, and we'll pay for your university. There are plenty of great opportunities here, why would you want to work on someone else's car...." speech.

a wise man* once told me "The hardest thing in life is getting out of bed each morning to do work a job you don't enjoy." and it's had a great impact on me. i've wanted to do all different things over the years, from wanting to be an architect to wanting to be a locksmith.
I'd be more happy if my Friends' company was in the states, they get paid upto $600/h to build race cars! No wonder one of my friends can afford to drive a diesel truck that gets 4mpg with our fuel prices..

For reference, do EVERYTHING in your power to get a loan from ANYONE but Sallie Mae. I am getting RAPED with over 13% interest on my $10k loan with them. It's absolutely killing me financially.
I'm hoping my new promotion/raise at work will help me secure a new private loan so I don't have to pay such an asinine interest rate any more.
That said, my parents never gave me a dime for my college. Granted, I didn't leave the country, but still. I paid for my first 2 years out of pocket. Then I changed schools/majors and had to take out loans for the other 3 years. I have no regrets. I know that I worked harder than a LOT of others because it was MY money going to waste if I sat around and drank all day long. There's something to be said for doing something for yourself by yourself.

You are quite lucky that your parents can actually afford to pay for your college. I was the youngest of 5 kids and most of the others went to college. My brothers had financial aid so that's what I did too. Although I went to school longer. So even though I finished up my Masters about 5 years ago (damn it's been that long) I still owe almost the same amount I borrowed because interest is ridiculous and will almost equal the same amount I've borrowed after paying it all off 15 years from now. I'll eventually dump it into a mortgage payment though... someday...

didn't make it to the embassy today, my dad wanted to have lunch with me (and help him choose a torque wrench)
i've talked to him about all this, he's a lot more positive than my mum, and more positive than i thought he'd be about it all. he said that the main concern and everything lies in the cost of college/housing/living expenses and also the potential earning after finishing the course and going into a career in the auto field.
anyone know a rought figure of what bmw/merc/ford auto techs earn? and what car tuners earn?
if it's not too expensive and everything can be sorted out then who knows, i might be going afterall. i've got to get all the info and talk to the college first, then i can sit down with him and go through it in greater detail and sort it out.

Its all about how many hours you can clock once you get landed somewhere. I'm sure you will, but if you end going there you HAVE to bust your ass in terms of grades and attendence. Porsche is about a 1 in million chance of getting them to hire you. I've heard them even passing up on 4.0gpa students just because they missed one day. Don't just settle for an automotive job either, you might want to consider taking diesel classes because there's a big demand for them over here. I'm sure you'll hear that line out the ass once you get here. Who knows, maybe Mercedes would be looking for a diesel tech. Either way though, in terms of money, unless you make it into one of the elite programs such as Porsche, BMW and Mercedes, your pay off the bat probally won't be all cheese and crackers because the more experienced techs will take most of the jobs, granted they can work more effeciently and they'll probally be given the jobs that "the book" says would take a long time, but they finish way before hand. I'm pretty sure you know how the mechanic's pay works. Bottom line is, if you make here, its all or nothing. Good news is, your first maybe 4 to 8 classes will be easy as pie, but the electrical classes are what always rape everybody. As a matter of fact, I might be able to get you alot of the notes and shit I got. I know it'll be alot more use to you than it is now just sitting in my garage.

+1 for that bro.
Take the diesel tech course, they also get you a CDL license in the process. Some of those specialists are making 60-90k working on big rigs. Plus you have a license to drive trucks, something else to fall back on if you need a job quickly.

Yea the Houston campus offered everything, including diesel. The performance part of school (Super Street and Hot Rod U) go together with the automotive courses. You'd be looking at about $32k-$34k for both diesel and automotive. Its a fucking rape job I know, but you don't have to start paying til 6 months after you graduate and they start your monthly payments off pretty low. Something around $150/month to start off with then it gradually increases.
The Houston campus is pretty decent, they have alot of on-campus manufacturer training facilities. If I remember right, BMW, Merc, Nissan, Ford ofcourse, and I think Toyota. Oh yea, Lexus is there too. Man the fuckin Merc building had me drooling....anyways.
In terms of city and location, Florida would probally be better. You gotta damn near be a F1 driver to survive driving around Houston during the day, and the neighborhoods and apartments close to the campus ain't exactly safe. People were gettin their shit busted in left and right in my apartments. As for the weather, man its humid as a monkey's ass over there. You'll find out that Houston and Florida actually have pretty similar climates.
On the upside, if you like excitement, Houston almost never sleeps, and there's alot of badass cars out there. Not to mention the beach, even though its nothing TOO spectacular, is only about a 35-45 minute drive away. South Padre Island isn't too far away neither.
Just let me know if you got anymore questions, I'll try my best to remember what all I went through, lol.

i'll talk to them and see if i can do diesel and performance, and how much it'll cost.
i'd like to do diesel because it's an intrest i have, and the money's quite an inscentive, but i'd rather work in performance. if i decide to only do performance, Orlando it is. if i can do both or my dad will only let me do diesel i guess it's Houston. i'm sure i'll be fine in the neighbourhood, i live in the nice part of london and we've had people killed on my road.
i guess once i've got a truck i'll just have to get an alarm and a gun.

Yea, just park in lighted areas and you'll be fine. They never tried to mess with my peice. My homeboy's Jetta go broke into, twice, and his apartments were more exspensive than mine. Sucka.

i should take one of my friends with me, he's known in his area and no one touches his truck.
he can literally park it with the windows down, keys in the ignition and engine running an no one will even go near it.
maybe i should get some jailhouse tats and tell people i did 5 years in Bellmarsh!
i think i should call the Orlando campus and the Texas campus some time. i didn't make it to the embassy today either, had a "negative development" and wasn't in the mood to stand in a mile-long que to get the paperwork i need.
so i'm definitely going on Friday, i'll try meet with someone there who can help me with this, get the paperwork done and in two months (when i'm 18) i'll go file it and see what happens.
if not, i'll try win the lottery.. (you can gain residency by investing $1,000,000 and employing a minimum on 10 people in the US)
