I bought a 2002 AWD in August of 06. My first AWD, always had rear wheel drives in the past. Can anybody tell me what the "TOW" button does in the shifter lever? I looked in the manual and it only tells me to use it when towing at low speeds. Does this button put my transfer case in low mode or something like that???
Thanks for any help!

When the tow/haul button is pushed in, a light on the dash will come on, (Tow/Haul), the shift points are raised, and the torque converter will not lock up.

Which is a good thing, the locking torque converter was designed by some idiot who lives at sea level and never fully loads his vehicle, let alone tows a trailer. when i had my 86 Safari tranny rebuilt the shop put in a Ford torque converter to avoid the lockup. be glad GM came up with a way to cancel the lockup, my Astro would lockup and drop to 30 mph in a 65 mph zone going over the pass when fully loaded or towing.
never, ever, let the quick lube guys talk you into a tranny flush or a filter and fluid change. take it to a reputable tranny shop and get their opinion.

In addition, line pressure in lower ranges is raised slightly to hold clutches more firmly, and the TCC will eventually lock, but only at ridiculously low load values and higher speeds. You really don't want to operate in that mode if it isn't necessary, since the trans will also run hotter.
The 1986 ECM programming left a lot to be desired in TCC management. They were a lot better just a couple yeas later.
