When I started my 99 Ram 318 today after it was outside all day in negative temperatures I could hear almost a whining that sounded like it was coming from the belt. Is this possibly because of the extreme cold, it seemed to go away as the engine warmed up. Also, how long should you let these Rams run before driving when it is extremely cold?
Thanks!!

This could have been the power steering pump straining to move extremely cold fluid. I recommend letting the engine run until it idles itself down. That's it's way of letting you know it's ready. It normally takes around 10-30 seconds. But it could take longer depending on outside temp.

Usually in the cold i let mine start until i know the inside will be warm. Takes around 15-20 minutes on those really cold days.
Sometimes if i just hop in and start ill hear some strain from the power steering

I try not to let my car idle no longer than 10 min. Supposedly it bad on an engine to idle for extended periods. But as ^he^ said, I like a warm car, so...
