Manual Transmission problem

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE 5 speed manual transmission that I am not sure what is wrong with it. I have no 3rd 4th or 5th gear. When I let the clutch out there is a grinding sound coming from the transmission as well, but if I push the clutch in there is no sound. Someone told me it is the throwout bearing, pilot bearning, synchronizers. Also should I just have the transmission rebuilt or do it myself.
Thanks ahead of time,
GLP

Is their any oil in the transmission? Throw-out bearings (one per car) make noise when you step on the clutch and the noise gets quieter or stops when the clutch peddle is up. If there is oil in the trans it is very unlikely that there is a trans problem. Fourth gear is direct drive. My guess is that your clutch was slipping and now it is coming apart. What were the circumstances that lead to this problem?

I was driving on the Florida turnpike and the cruse control was on. I pressed the button to slow down, after slowing down the car in front of me moved and then I pushed the button to speed up. When I did this the car poped out of 5th gear. I tried to put it back in and would not go in. So I put it in 4th to get off at the next exit and 4th just stoped working while the shifter was in 4th. Then I had to use 3rd gear. I pulled over at a store and when I tried to put in 4th or 5th and let of the clutch nothing would happen and it made a grinding sound. I checked the gear oil before I was to go on the road trip from Florida to Missouri. There is no leak that I can see.
1st 2nd 3rd and Reverse are the only gear that work now. Even when the car is in Neutral and the clutch is out it sounds like it is grinding apart.
Thanks Again
Gary

Interesting. I successfully replaced all the bearings in my transmission. I have many years of gear experience and special tools. Removing the transmission is your next step. Inspection would be your next following step. The repair manuals suggest that trans repair should not be attempted. I can certainly understand why. They are very different than earlier American design transmissions, and a lot more expensive. Your trans is probably a larger but similar design to my 4cyl eng trans. Search for used trans prices with some kind of warranty, maybe available through someone who has JDM connections. If you believe there is a possibility that the cause is simple roll pin problem, drain the oil and check for metal. If you don't see any metal in the oil, refill it with ATF to flush the nasty smelling gear oil out before you take the case off.

have you checked the fluid lately in clutch master cyl.?? and your grinding sounds like throw-out bearing..but now i think you may have to have new clutch, presure plate, and throw-out bearing and if slipped the clutch you'll need fly wheel turned.
good luck...
