I love this forum and live by it!! I should of listened though. How stupid of me. 2000 Passport 3.2l V6 119k miles. If anyone has a whirlling sound at startup coming from the front of the engine on a cold (30 or below) day and the sound continues after about 10-15 minutes...CHANGE YOUR IDLE PULLEY VALVE!! Do it, just do it!!!

She locked up on me this morning on my way to work, thankfully I was only going 2 mph and 1/2 block away from the house. The repair was $250, I was thinking around $2000, whew...

Guys, keep up the good work and continue to provide the best advice available anywhere!!!!

Thanks, KC

thanks for the update! Mine is still doing it at for about 2-3 minutes when it is below 30 outside.

i'll have to call up the dealer and get a quote to see what it costs. I know the after market part costs about 20 bucks, and I can't imagine it would take more then 30 minutes of labor.

oh don't worry! I do a lot of stuff myself. I just get a little worried about torquing down bolts and snapping them off (I snapped 2 off on the diff cover before).

Shouldn't cost more than $40-$50 if you change out your belt. It can be done in 15 minutes.

When I saw 2eye posted, I thought it was going to be to say that he could swap it before you could down a shot of tequila!

Mine Started doing it this winter after it got really cold, seems to make less noise when it wamer outside. Better jump on it before it's too late!!!!!
and I hope it's not something else, could it be anything else???????

When it's cold the noise could be anything.

Last year when it got really cold and I heard the same type of noise as Kcorry, I wish it had been the idle pulley - my noise turned out to be a failing waterpump.

My idler pulley got changed at the same time though.

Hey guys,
I wish it was a DIY!!! It could be a bad IMG causing the sound, but it definitely was the IPV. But the saga continues, the s-belt that was replaced is now showed some splitting after a week. Good thing, it's covered: bad thing: gotta get a tow so I don't damage anything else.

It's the idler pulley (so as to avoid confusion for future searchers who don't know as much as some of the regulars).

My truck is going into the dealer today at 1PM. It isn't getting any better and it has been ongoing for the last 3 winters ....

Ok done. They think it was the pulley. I'll find out tomorrow morning.

no dice. The ride home from work the sound was back....

Originally, when I spoke with the dealer they said they replace one recently, and it didn't help, then they replaced the fan clutch due to a broken weld and it stopped the noise.

I wonder if the fan clutch is covered by the 10yr 120k warranty?

amigo-2k,

Did you get your truck back from the dealer yet? If you did. What did they find wrong with it. Thanks.

they swapped out the idler pulley. 4 hours after they did it I drove it home from work and I had the same sound.

But yesterday on the way to work I heard nothing. and after the truck sat for +9 hours outside on the way home it didn't make a peep.

So I'll have to see what it does today on the way home (13 deg outside).

Mine making noise when it cold, 20F or below but replaced idle pulley last winter when it seized on me and replaced timing belt, water pump last summer. Could any of these gone bad again and causing the noise? I temped to replace the belt but it is too cold out side now. Any suggestions to this. Thanks.

The saga continues..The belt shredded again...ugh!!! It started to make the sound 2 weeks after getting it repaired. Limped to the mechanic this morning. The belt slipped 1/4 inch off the tensior pulley. To top things off the Fan Clutch needs to be replaced. In total, I will have spent $780 for belt, tensioner, idle pulley and now fan clutch with labor.

Good times, good times..

KC
